This was a much improved team performance today, with a host of good individual displays across the board. A special mention goes to Jack Boardman on his debut proving himself to be a strong, formidable opponent at right back.
Jordan Smith demonstrated a fantastic team spirit by volunteering to go in goal making a couple of valuable saves and dominating the penalty area. The team looks forward to welcoming Dan Bunting who starts as the regular team goalkeeper from next week.
The game pitted two evenly matched sides but the difference proved to be a solid back four performance from Jack, Tom, Ollie and Alex B. Team captain Harrison, alongside Ian, Peter, Danny & Sam added depth to the midfield supplemented by Alex W, whilst Dean worked hard closing down the opposition and was unlucky to not have a goal to show for his hard work.
There was a brace of well worked goals, one in each half from our mild mannered striker Callum Pearce. Olly Wearing continued to shine after a sterling training session this week with a determined display, earning him the ‘mars bar award’.
Joint Man of the Match was awarded to Jordan Smith and Callum Pearce.

CRAVEN WANDERERS 4 COCKERHAM 2
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goalscorers: Dean Cross 1 Callum Pearce 1
Referee: Mr. R. Beales.
Man of the Match: Matt Rawlinson.
The first game of the season saw the longest away trip possible in our league, Craven away. The side was depleted due to holidays and Cricket!!! ( why play such a boring game during the football season), but twelve players turned up to play. In net for us today was Matt Rawlinson who gave a great performance in an unfamiliar position. We had a back four of Alex Bennishaw , Peter Bevan , Ollie Wearing and Harrison Todhunter. Alex is new and had a good debut ,Peter gave his all up and down the right flank, Ollie had his best game in a red and white shirt in my opinion and Harrison gave his usual captain's flawless performance. The midfield diamond was Danny Hill , Callum Pearce and Alex Wellens. Danny ran his heart out and paid for it in the second half ,Cal enjoyed the physical role in the midfield and Alex ran wherever the ball was. Up front today we had a three man attack of Sam Marshall ,Ian Makinson and Dean Cross. Sam started uncharacteristically slowly but got stronger the longer the game carried on, Ian's (I am Rory Delap) throws were immense and caused trouble to the opposition all game .Dean's pace will frighten a few defences this season.
So now to the game: Cockerham started the game playing some lovely passing football but after ten minutes were behind to a well worked goal. Our heads did not go down even though they got a swift second goal and though we missed chances to clear a third fluke goal which makes it seem as though we were outplayed, box to box we were playing some lovely flowing football and had our chances. Then five minutes from half time Ollie danced past three challenges with such elegant footwork and floated a ball towards Dean and Callum. Dean then chested the ball down and with one touch raced clear of the Craven defenders and fired a low shot into the keepers right hand corner. Half time Craven 3 Cockerham 1.
The second half Cockerham were all fired up and quickly got a second goal with some great individual work Callum scored a goal into the top right corner into the postage stamp, ( I scored a screamer, his words). Cockerham continued to press for the equaliser but a great display from the Craven keeper who made one tremendous save and numerous good saves, saw theopposing goal leading a charmed life, despite us having three or four corners in a row delivered into dangerous areas by Sam. But the equaliser just wouldn't come and we were caught on the break but with more than a suspicion of hand ball Craven got a forth goal. To sum up a great performance that we can build on. Man of the Match Matt Rawlinson, mars bar to the exceptional Ollie. Well done to all the lads for a promising start to the season.
