ANDREW GETS A HAT-TRICK:
3rd February 16-10

COCKERHAM 4 WESTGATE WANDERERS 2
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Andrew Smith 3 Chris Woodhouse 1
Referee: Mr. D Whitehead
Man of the Match: Owen Rimmer

The surprise for all, was the fact that this game was going ahead as planned.  Given the rain during the week, many were anticipating that it would be postponed.  Cockerham had a total of fourteen players available therefore the Management Team had the luxury three substitutes.

Once again the Cockerham start looked tentative with Westgate Wanderers successfully moving the ball around.  Once Cockerham got to grips with the game they had immediate success.  After four minutes Owen Rimmer gathered the ball, playing it onto Mark Bevan, who made ground before releasing Andrew Smith who timed his run perfectly to slot home past the Keeper.  Expectations were now high but Westgate were not going to lie down.  Despite continued Cockerham pressure, Westgate gradually played their way back into the game and five minutes later equalled the score, following an excellent strike.  Both teams moved the ball around well, with Cockerham failing to capitalise on the good work in midfield.  Most of the excursions into the opposition penalty area were initiated from here, with, Owen Rimmer in particular running into space and calling for the ball.  He managed to get couple of good shots away, one of which was well saved by the keeper, the other lacking power from the position that it was made.  However after twenty minutes play, it was the determination and persistence of Andrew Smith that engineered Cockerham’s second goal.  After continued pressure the ball fell loose, failing to cross the dead ball line. While both the Westgate defence and Keeper hesitated, Andrew nipped in to gather the ball, rounded the Keeper and planted the ball in the back of the net.  One minute prior to the conclusion of the first half, Chris Woodhouse gathered in mid field and surged forward to release a shot that gave the Westgate Keeper no chance.  Half time score Cockerham 3 Westgate Wanderers 1.

During the second half, whilst Cockerham strived to enhance their advantage, Westgate continued to hold out and created chances of their own.  It was one such chance after ten minutes of the second half restart that brought an excellent save from Keeper Graham to deny them a goal.  The tie was really sealed when James Malloy-Mason hit a stunning strike from some thirty yards out which rattled the bar and dropped back into play where Andrew Smith was on hand to complete his hat-trick.  The game ebbed and flowed from one end of the pitch to other when on half through the halve, Westgate hit another strong shot that looked as though it would bulge the back of the net until Josh threw himself across the goal mouth to spectacularly turn the shot away.  Such a brilliant save deserved a lot better, but a forward was on hand to lash the ball into the net and that’s how it remained at the end.  Cockerham 4 Westgate Wanderers 2.  The pitch suffered as a result of the game being play and unfortunately the Westgate players and management became vocal regarding this topic, passing comments for all to hear.  At the end of the day the conditions were the same for both sides and nobody raised any objections before the game commenced, the ground having been cleared by both the ground staff and referee.

This was again a strong performance from all the team, with a number of candidates for Man of the Match.  Not least of which was Andrew Smith who scored his first hat-trick for the Club, since joining at the beginning of the season.  The Man of the Match Award however, went to Owen Rimmer who had had two consecutive outstanding performances.  Next week it is Highgrove at home, weather permitting.  Another performance like this and a favourable result should be on the cards.

A GAME OF TWO HALVES:
26th January 15-00

CARNFORTH RANGERS 5 COCKERHAM 3
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Greg Carter 1 Mark Bevan 1(P) Andrew Smith 1
Referee: Provided by Carnforth Rangers
Man of the Match: Harry Marshall

Cockerham travelled to the Quarry Ground Carnforth, on Sunday the 22nd January 2012, for the return fixture against Carnforth Rangers.  It was anticipated that this would be a tough fixture as Carnforth won our home leg 5-1 and are currently heading the League table.  With thirteen players available, Cockerham had the luxury of two substitutes.

Carnforth got off to a lively start and immediately had Cockerham on the back foot.  After five minutes the ball was delivered from the left wing to the edge of penalty area, inviting a well struck lob, which keeper Graham had covered but fumbled allowing to the ball to creep in just under the bar.  Josh did however redeem himself following the restart, when he dived bravely at the feet of a forward, who thought he had the easy task of planting the ball in the back of the net.  Carnforth progressively become rampant, totally dominating the first half.  They swung the ball about, not allowing Cockerham time to settle.  Carnforth scored a further three goals to take a four nil lead at half time.  Cockerham had two good chances to score but took that extra touch instead of hitting the ball first time.  Owen Rimmer raised spirits when he found space on the edge of the area, shouted loudly for the ball and hit a powerful shot which was just inches wide of the post.  Cockerham were also guilty allowing Carnforth two sloppy goals.  The third as a result of the defence’s failure to clear the ball and the fourth as a result of the defence allowing a forward to run through their ranks unchallenged.  On a better day the half time score could have only been one nil down or better still, 2-2.

What a difference the half time team talk made.  Maybe it was the reference to preventing a cricket score.  One thing was for sure, a fully determined and committed team took to the field for the second half.  Two enforced changes were made due to injury.  George Morris succumbed to a back injury, originally sustained playing rugby and Daniel Lamb as a result of a groin strain.  They were replaced by Matthew Hurst and Tariq Baraka, both of whom slotted in well, putting in good performances with the latter, outstanding.  It was Tariq, who within one minutes of the restart set the standard by winning his challenge and moving the ball down the left flank to Harry Marshall, who passed on to Andrew Smith. Andrew cut in and hit a powerful shot that screamed over the heads of everyone to strike the far top corner of crossbar and post.  The ball hung momentarily before dropping back into play, where Greg Carter was on hand to direct it to the back of the net.  Seven minutes later, Greg, who was on a solo run, again from the left, rounded the defender only to be brought down in the penalty area. Mark Bevan successfully converted from the spot to provide a challenging 4-2 score line, which remained for all of two minutes. Harry Marshall who was now having an outstanding game tackling hard, with dogged determination and winning every ball, stroked it onto Greg, who had interchanged with Andrew Smith, who received the cross and this time made sure the ball found the net.  There is always a what, might have been.  This occurred when Harry Marshall made a solo run down the left flank, tried to emulate Andrew Smith by hitting a tremendous shot, that when the net moved all the spectators thought it was in.  Regrettably it had just cleared the bar and settled on the roof of the net.  Unfortunately for Cockerham the next and final goal was scored by Carnforth who swung the ball from left to right and made no mistake putting the chance away.  Final score 5-3.

This was an exciting match to watch with good performances from the team throughout.  The outstanding performance however was from Harry Marshall, who deservedly received the Man of the Match award.  Well done lads the second half was outstanding, you just left yourselves too much to do by starting too slowly.  The planned fixture for next Sunday, against Lancaster City, has now been amended by the League and will now not be played until March or April.  We now have a home fixture against Westgate Wanderers, who currently sit one position above us in the League table.  It also gives us three weeks to hone our skills before again facing Heysham Blue Star, away, in the semi final of the League Cup.

Goal Scorers: Andrew Smith 1 (P)

Man of the Match: Josh Graham

What a long wait, the last game having been played on the 4th December 2011.  There was no gentle return either after the Festive season, with Heysham Blue Star, one of the strongest league contenders, visiting the Les Blackburn Memorial ground, for this, the first game of the New Year.  Cockerham started with a squad of thirteen, having two substitutes available.

Heysham Blue Star started strongly and went a goal up in the first minute of the game.  Winning the first corner, of many, the perfect ball was delivered to the centre of the six yard box and strongly headed into the net.  This was a trademark goal for Heysham, giving them the perfect start.  Cockerham were pinned back for eighty percent of the half, taking time to gain their shape and direction.  Keeper Graham and defender George Morris were both producing strong performances, with Josh making a fine double save to maintain the 0-1 score line at half time.

The second half was similar to the first with Heysham Blue Star dominating throughout.  Cockerham did however fight throughout and did manage some impressive excursions into the Heysham box.  Heysham added a further four goals before Cockerham were able to respond, with a penalty in the last minute of the game.   Andrew Smith, who had covered a lot of ground throughout the game, ventured into the opposition penalty area, having played some nice link play with James Malloy-Mason and Mark Bevan, only to receive a nasty, studs exposed, high tackle, which resulted in the penalty award.  Despite, appearing to be badly injured, Andrew rose to blast the spot kick into the roof the net.  Heysham Blue Star deserved their 5-1 win but Cockerham produced a commendable, determined performance, with every player fully contributing.   George Morris and Josh Graham were strong throughout, with Josh receiving the Man of the Match award as a result of a string of excellent saves.

Sorry lads it's another strong test next week with an away game against Carnforth Rangers.  Following training on Thursday evening you should be able to produce another strong performance and hopefully receive just reward.

What a difference a week makes.  The full squad of fifteen attended this match, albeit that one continued his role as an enforced spectator.  The inclusion of the two rugby enthusiasts made such a difference to the team composition.  Their game of rugby was called off therefore both Chris and James were raring to go. Their physical presence and level of fitness, which the remainder of the team still aspire to achieve, made such a difference.   The welcome return of George Briault after long term injury was also encouraging and one hopes that George, who participated in the second half, came through this test unscathed.  He certainly put in the type of tenacious performance that has become his signature.

The first half was very even with both teams holding their own and cancelling one another out.  It was good to see the level of determination within the Cockerham team and their endeavours to play attractive structured football.  The defence were working well and getting their clearances to the mid field where Mark Bevan was his industrious self acting as the link man and play maker. Regrettably he suffered a reoccurrence of the groin strain that he had battled with last week, mid way through the second half.  The fact that he was forced to leave the field of play is cause for real concern.  The introduction of George Morris into the defence half way through the first half helped to strengthen this area of play as pressure had been building.  Cockerham were the first to break the deadlock after twenty six minutes.  Harry Marshall took a good firm corner, which floated nicely to the far post where Greg Carter rose majestically to head into the back of the net.   This advantage was enjoyed for just three minutes.  The Cockerham defence lost their concentration and were slow to react allowing Highgrove to toe punt the ball just inside the post to equal the score and produce a half time score line of 1-1.

The second half started so differently, with Cockerham under constant pressure and unable to sustain any momentum.  The introduction of George Briault and the continued determination and running of both Chris Woodhouse and James Malloy-Mason made the difference and it was Cockerham who again broke the deadlock.  Halfway through the second half they began to once again ease themselves back into the game and string some passes together. They were now putting Highgrove under pressure and a nice flowing move out of defence saw James Malloy-Mason surging forward following some interplay with Matthew Hurst.  Having worked some space James feed the ball to Andrew Smith on the right wing, who made good ground releasing and excellent early cross which found Harry Marshall racing in on the far post.  Harry, previously provider, was now predator, screaming in to smash the ball into the back of the net, despite the brave efforts of the Highgrove keeper.  At 1-2 Cockerham were now in the ascendancy and continuing to pressurise the Highgrove goal.  Highgrove were now starting to gamble playing the long ball forward in the hope that one of their players would latch onto it. With just one minute of the match remaining the gamble paid off.  The ball cleared the defensive line and saw the Highgrove forward and Daniel Lamb neck and neck challenging for the ball.  Despite Dan’s brave efforts and attention the Highgrove forward managed once again to get a toe cap to the ball which beat the diving outstretched arm of Josh Graham.  Final score 2-2.  Both keepers had a good game making match winning saves to keep the game alive for their respective teams.  Chris Woodhouse deservedly won the Cockerham  Man of the Match award for his determination and untiring running.

This was a good all round performance and a significant improvement on last week.  O.K. the desired mindset did not quite work but you did not lose and produced a performance that you can both be proud of and build upon.  The golden opportunity to continue this progression presents itself next week, when as a result of an amendment to the original fixture list, we host Carnforth Rangers “A”.  Remember we will win and score lots of goals in the process.

CARNFORTH RANGERS “A” 3 COCKERHAM 1
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Greg Carter
Referee: Mr. L. Clarke
Man of the Match: George Morris

What is it about our fixtures at Carnforth High School, playing Carnforth Rangers “A”?  For thirty minutes of this game it was déjà vu.  Last season we were shorthanded, starting with only nine and finishing with ten, Matthew Barton having left a christening party to come to the rescue.  Unfortunately his efforts were not rewarded with the team losing 1-0 having squandered numerous chances.  This time, due to injury attrition, we were only able to field ten players, of which three were not a hundred per cent fit. Matthew Hurst is still off colour following a sickness bug, Matthew Tucker was running a temperature and did well to last the game and Mark Bevan was carrying a groin strain.  All commendably made it to the game and played to make the required numbers, showing true dedication.   George Briault and Owen Rimmer both of whom attempted to train on Friday but aggravated what are potentially serious long term injuries, attended the game, showing equal loyalty to the team.

Carnforth Rangers “A” second to bottom in the league, having only won two games from eleven were 1-0 up after less than a minutes play.  A deft flick caught the Cockerham defence cold, when one of their forwards raced onto the ball, dribbled round advancing keeper Graham, leaving him stranded, with no back cover and coolly ushered the ball across the goal line.  One expected Cockerham to recover immediately but their play lacked structure and motivation and the defence were constantly under pressure as a result.  The back four held firm and were able to repel all advances during the first half of play but their distribution was poor. George Morris was outstanding as he continues to be the most improved player, in each game he plays.  When the ball did reach the forwards, play was either broken down by the Carnforth defence or opportunities were squandered.  With the spectators fearing the worst with five minutes of the half remaining, Greg Carter sprung to life and played like we all know he can. Receiving a pass from Harry Marshall just outside the opposition area, he made space to set himself up to hit a brilliant strike that flew into the back of the net.  Half time score 1-1.

The second half was dire, with nothing working for Cockerham, despite, fine saves from keeper Graham, good running from Andrew Smith and opportunities created for Greg Carter but no further goals were scored.  Andrew tried too hard, not getting his crosses in early enough and failing to remain calm in front of goal.  Greg was unable to repeat the clinical finishing he demonstrated on the one occasion in the first half and Josh found himself retrieving the ball from the back of his net after fifty-five and sixty-two minutes, producing a disappointing score line of 3-1 in favour of Carnforth Ranger “A”.

Despite the lack of numbers, this was a truly disappointing performance.  One has to question the mindset of the team and their confidence in their proven ability.  Each game should be entered with a, we can win, we will win, mentality.  The first opportunity to turn things around again, comes next Sunday against Highgrove, who will be an altogether different proposition.  George Morris deservedly received the Man of the Match award.

GOOD NEWS BAD NEWS:
November 16 21-16

Sunday’s game against Heysham Blue Star is postponed due to their continuing involvement in the L.F.A. Cup.  They will be away to St. Helens Town Juniors and Cockerham wish them every success.  We therefore have no Fixture on Sunday the 20th November 2011 and as a result you can have a rest.  Mike, however would like to recover the position regarding training and hold a session on Friday the 18th November 2011 subject to your availability.  Please advise Mike of your availability as soon as possible as he requires a minimum of 10 to make it worthwhile.

Cockerham visited the undulations of Ryelands Park for this return fixture against Bare Rangers Red.  Four weeks ago, Bare walked away with all three points from the fixture at the Les Blackburn Memorial Ground to retain the supremacy they have maintained for the past two seasons.  This therefore was an opportunity for Cockerham to recalibrate their performance and re-establish their hard earned status within the league. Referee Mr. Y. Tsado led a period of a minutes silence, this being Remembrance Sunday.

The first half was extremely even with both teams hampered by the pitch conditions, which severely hindered any free flowing play.  Not only were the undulations extreme in certain areas, the pitch was heavily pitted as a result of a senior game on Saturday afternoon causing the ball to bobble, stick and continually get caught up in the players feet.   As a result the tackles, at times resembled those of a Rugby match, rather than a soccer match.  The Bare Rangers supporters were equally unhappy about the pitch conditions but are struggling to source alternative facilities. Having said all this, the pitch conditions were the same for both teams.  Both sides failed to capitalise on the few opportunities that were created, with Cockerham missing two clear and one half chance.  Bare Rangers on the other hand were thwarted by a fine save by Keeper Graham and the dogged determination of the back four of Tariq Baraka, Matthew Barton, Daniel Lamb and George Morris, all of whom were immense.   Half Time score 0-0.

Bare Rangers Red took just two minutes from the start of the second half to open the scoring. The Cockerham defence for the first time were slow to react, Keeper Graham got down well to the shot but failed to gather cleanly, allowing an advancing forward a simple tap in. 1-0.  Bare now thought they were in the ascendancy but Cockerham heads never went down and if anything their determination increased.  Nineteen minutes into the second hand the ball was feed out to Chris Woodhouse on the right wing.  Chris made a good run cutting in just slightly and shy of the bye line to release a cross that never quite came back and sailed over the Bare Keepers head into the back of the net.  Despite the efforts of both teams, a score line of 1-1 remained at the final whistle.

This was a tremendous team effort with all twelve players exhibiting determination, pride and a willingness to support and work for the good of the team.  Matthew Hurst left his sick bed to ensure that sufficient numbers were available due to an increasing injury list.  Chris Woodhouse, having played an away Ruby Cup game in the morning, managed to arrive part way through the first half to have an excellent game, score the goal and win the Man of the Match award  The sterling efforts of Captain Mark Bevan should not be under estimated.  Set a specific task, which in turn stifled his normal game, which he initially responded too hesitantly, became the critical path as he progressively warmed to the task, stifling the match play of his opposite number.  When Mark lost or was beaten by his opponent, Matthew Tucker was not far away covering the situation.  There were at times some nice flowing moves that had Bare troubled but we failed to put away the chances created.  This is now the missing link.  But fear not it will come, as will the improved fitness levels that the majority of the team still required.  This was a true team effort that you should all be proud of.  Repeat this next week and you will give Heysham Blue Star a real fright and be up there amongst the best.

Man of the Match: The Whole Team.

On a very pleasant sunny afternoon Cockerham hosted Craven Wanderers who had made the long trek from Ingleton to participate in this, the second round of the League Cup.  Expectations were high following the sterling performance, the previous week against Lancaster, when Cockerham produced their best football and sustained effort of the season.  Craven, who had bravely fought with only nine players just two weeks previous, in our away fixture, now, had the full complement of eleven players.  Cockerham repeated their quiet pre-match preparation of the previous week, with Manager Mike Bevan briefing each section of the formation separately, before bring the whole team together for final clarification.  Craven on the other hand adopted the pumped up method with much verbal encouragement from their manager.

Regrettably, it therefore followed, that it was not brave but whinging Craven that took to the field.  Right from the first whistle they were querying every decision made by the referee or linesman, albeit on occasions it was their own linesman.  Cockerham disregarded this approach and totally dominated the game for the first ten minutes without converting any of the opportunities that came their way.  During this initial passage of play, the first of the Craven players was lectured by the referee.  Craven however persisted in their attempts to raise their game and played some neat football, producing an even match for the remainder of the first half.  The deadlock was broken by Cockerham after twenty-six minutes when Andrew Smith and Owen Rimmer communicated well.  Andrew, who had made ground at pace, found his path blocked and played a nice pass back to Owen to hit a sweetly struck shot which had, goal, all over it.  Unfortunately for Owen, the ball struck a combination of the post and cross bar, dropping at the feet of Greg Carter, to tap it into the net.  Craven never gave up and created some opportunities for themselves.  They equalised just before half-time with an opportunist goal, when one of their mid field players, just inside the Cockerham half, hit a good looping shot at goal, catching Keeper Graham well off his line and in no man’s land.  Josh realised late, that he was stranded and saw the ball clear his efforts to run back and gather and could only watch as it bounced into the back of the net. Half time score 1-1.

Cockerham totally dominated the second half and should have had more than the three goals that they added.  Craven became more and more frustrated, continually appealing and questioning, some with justification, but none of it in the spirit of the Respect campaign.  The Craven Keeper was the one player that kept his cool, making a series of competent saves, particularly in the air.  Cockerham added their second one minute from the restart when Andrew Smith drove a strong corner into the box, which James Malloy-Mason powered onto, heading the ball into the back of the net. The third followed some sixteen minutes later when the ever dangerous Andrew Smith had a clear run and drove the ball fiercely into the bottom corner of the net, for a well placed goal.  The fourth was a penalty that followed a dangerous passage of play.  Andrew Smith was lucky not to receive a broken leg following a mistimed tackle that left both players in a crumpled heap. Again, regrettably the Craven Manager and linesman whinged away at the referee, in what for him was becoming a torrid afternoon.  The penalty followed minutes later when a Craven defender was unfortunate to commit a foul in the area and Mark Bevan converted from the spot.  A second Craven player was lectured by the referee, for continual whinging and dissent before Greg Carter committed the miss of the season. The final score was 4-1, in favour of Cockerham.

This was a good performance under difficult circumstances.  Well done to Cockerham for not getting involved in the unacceptable face of football.

On the eve of Halloween, Cockerham hosted the current league leaders, Lancaster, at the Les Blackburn Memorial ground.  The first treat was the fact that the game was played at all, given the amount of rain that had fallen the day before.  Following a pitch inspection on Sunday morning the pitch was declared playable.  Had there have been any further rain before the game, it would have to have been called off.

The first trick was the start of the game being delayed due to an accident in Lancaster that was preventing some of the opposition getting to the ground on time. The extra time provided both sets of Managers with the additional opportunity to finalise their strategy and provide valuable briefings to their squads.  Cockerham were without George Briault due to a long term injury, which could keep him out for a few more weeks yet and Matthew Hurst and Daniel Lamb were absent due to the school half term holidays.  They did however welcome James Malloy-Mason to his first game with the squad.  He together with Chris Woodhouse, were both available, having played Ruby in the morning and demonstrated their superior fitness levels compared with the majority of the remainder of the team.  It was good to see the various section of the team being briefed on what was required of them prior to the game starting.

When the game eventually started, fifteen minutes late, it was played at a frenetic pace, with both teams performing fluent moves, in an end to end encounter.  Lancaster won a corner after ten minutes and promptly despatched the ball to the back of the net with a firm well placed header. The majority of the Cockerham supporters suspected the worst and felt that this was a sign of things to come. The team however had other ideas and with Lancaster recognising the potential threat and resorting to a physical approach, which at times transcended the legal boundaries, Cockerham won a free kick as a result of an overzealous foul, just two minutes later.  Andrew Smith directed a fine free kick, which was headed onto the bar by Mark Bevan and finally driven in by Matthew Tucker, to equal the score line at 1-1.  Some six minutes later it was Cockerham's turn to win a corner when they were able to repeat the Lancaster feat and go 2-1 up.  A good corner taken by Andrew Smith was headed goalwards by Matthew Tucker. The Lancaster keeper made a good save, but the rebound was despatched into the back of the net by Mark Bevan.  Lancaster immediately responded from the restart, producing a fine cross which was again headed into the net to again equal the score line at 2-2.  Knowing Cockerham supporters anticipated that this would be the half time score line but there was another treat in store.   New boy James Malloy-Mason rattled the cross bar and Cockerham had a couple of attempts to redirect the ball between posts before Greg Carter kept his cool and drove a fine ground shot into the net, producing a totally unexpected half time score of 3-2 in favour of Cockerham.  This was a fine performance lads and one wondered how long it would continue.  This had been a pulsating half with both keepers playing their part by making some fine and well time saves to keep their respective teams in the game.

The second half commenced at an equally frenetic pace with neither side wishing to give any quarter.   It was Lancaster, after just four minutes who produced an excellent cross, which was well met and despatched to the net.   All equal and everything to play for.  Who would crack first?  There was no time to draw breath as straight from the restart James Malloy- Mason gathered and surged forward producing a stunning shot which was curling away but just caressed the upright and cross bar to nestle snugly in the net, despite the gallant effort of the Lancaster keeper.  All to hope for, Cockerham  4-3 up.  Play became more and more physical as tensions grew on the touch line and the Lancaster manager prowled like a disgruntled hunting tiger.  He need not have worried quite so much, as the right side of his forward line, which had been a major threat throughout, eventually came good.  The winger made a solo run from just inside the Cockerham half making ground unchallenged to despatch a shot that gave Keeper Graham no chance at all. All even at 4-4.  A further seven minutes of nerve racking play ensued before the unfortunate Tariq Baraka misjudged his tackle on the edge of the area and the resultant penalty gave Lancaster the advantage at 5-4.  This was regrettably followed by a keeping error two minutes later and Lancaster extended their lead to 6-4 and so it remained at the end of an excellent and exciting game.   Man of the Match could have gone to anyone, the whole team even.  The unanimous decision however went to Captain Mark Bevan, who once again had been industrious, productive and lead by example throughout.

This was an excellent and much improved performance lads.  One that should indicate, that if you all work hard and for one another, you should fear no one.  The addition of James Malloy-Mason and the new formation added a new dimension and additional thrust to the team.  Some were not particularly comfortable with their positions but some fine tuning will overcome that.  Next week it's Craven Wanderers at home in the league cup, weather permitting.  No complacency, how many goals can you score?

BRAVE CRAVEN:
October 25 22-20

CRAVEN WANDERERS 2 COCKERHAM 7
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Harry Marshall 1 Andrew Smith 2 Mark Bevan 2 Josh Graham 1 Greg Carter 1
Referee: Not Known.
Man of the Match: George Morris.

Cockerham made the longest journey of the season to Ingleton for the return tie against Craven Wanderers on a reasonably bright Sunday afternoon.  Expectations were high with Craven rooted to the bottom of the League table and Cockerham having won the previous tie 4-1.

Cockerham, with just a bare squad and no substitutes, made a bright start against a depleted Craven nine man squad. They exerted pressure right from the whistle and were a goal up after two minutes, when Harry Marshall was on hand to smash in a shot, after the Craven Keeper beat out a fierce shot from Andrew Smith.  This was followed up four minutes later when roles were reversed with Harry Marshall crossing for Andrew Smith to score in his second consecutive match.  Cockerham continued to pressurise and added a further two goals before half time.  The third a deft flick from Mark Bevan only just made it across the goal line, despite the brave efforts of the Craven Keeper.  Craven despite their numbers were determined to try and make a game of it but were enable breach the defensive line of Tariq Baraka, Matthew Barton, Daniel Lamb and George Morris.   George was having an excellent game and seize on the opportunity to hit a volley fiercely and accurately which brought a fine save from the Craven Keeper. The fourth goal was again scored by the athletic Andrew Smith when he ran onto yet another through ball to provide a 4-0 score line in favour of Cockerham at half time.

The second half commenced with Keeper Josh Graham galloping onto the left wing and the diminutive Harry Marshall replacing him in goal in a jumper three sizes too big for him.  Cockerham’s start to this half was even sharper when a nicely weighted ball was played down the left wing by Owen Rimmer for Josh Graham to run onto, cut in and hit a fierce shot into the net.  Cockerham extended their lead to six, a minute later, when following good work down the right flank involving the ever improving George Morris and the ensuing goal mouth scramble, with Greg Carter on hand to ram the ball into the back of the net.  Craven’s resolve was rewarded when an alert forward latched onto a ball kicked from the arms of the unfortunate Harry Marshall, who found himself helpless when the return fizzed passed him into the net.  The combination of a number of positional changes by Cockerham and the added determination of Craven combined to upset Cockerham's momentum and the urge to score as many goals as possible diminished. Craven were now allowed to pressurise an out of balance defence and were rewarded with a second goal when they force an error with Cockerham scoring an own goal.  Tariq Baraka who was not enjoying a spell on the left flank put in some good work crossing for Mark Bevan to add his second.  The drama was not over until  a final attempt,  resulting from a penalty award was given to Man of the Match George Morris to score a goal. He hit a brilliant strike which brought about an equally excellent save from the Craven Keeper who had a tremendous game throughout.   Final score 7-2 to Cockerham and more misery for brave Craven.  They should however be proud of their performance.  With a full squad and continued determination they will improve their position.

This was an improved all round performance, particularly in the first half.  Well done lads.  The next fixture is Lancaster at home.

BARE WIN:
17th October 22-00

COCKERHAM 2 BARE RANGERS RED 5
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Andrew Smith 2
Referee: Mr. T. Daniels
Man of the Match Andrew Smith

The two fixtures each season, between these teams invariably give an accurate indication as where each will finish in the end of season league table.  Both teams entered this fixture having suffered mixed fortunes thus far, with Cockerham having Won 2 and Lost 2 and Bare Rangers Red Won 4 Lost 2, putting them six points ahead at this early stage of the season.  It was therefore important that Cockerham performed well in order to stay in touch.  Unfortunately Bare demonstrated their superiority, which has steadily increased over the last two seasons and walked away with all three points.  Yes it is still very early in the season with ample time to improve but based on this performance Bare are arguably destined to finish in the top three or four and Cockerham two or three places below.  Is this what you want Lads?

The first phase of the game was very even, with each team sounding out the other, and remained so for nineteen minutes until Bare Rangers Red broke the deadlock.  Cockerham missed a golden opportunity to take the lead when an excellent passage of played resulted in Harry Marshall having a one on one chance with the Bare Keeper.  The Keeper stood firm and made a good save when he parried Harrys strong shot for a corner. Bare took the lead when their No 10 and team captain powerfully won the ball in midfield and beat two players to hit a superb shot that left Keeper Graham with no chance. Strength, excellent feet, total ball control and determination all contributed in fashioning this goal. The same player repeated a similar move two minutes later.  This time drilling his shot across the ground and through the defence. Half time score Cockerham 0 Bare Rangers Red 2.

Bare restarted where they had left off and soon added a third when the Cockerham defence was beaten by a through ball leaving Keeper Graham isolated one on one with little or no chance of being able to make the save.  Cockerham are always guilty in such circumstances of standing and watching rather than any defender attempting to get back on the goal line behind their stranded keeper.  Honest analysis will show that more goals have been conceded in this manner than clear strikes which Josh normally handles most competently.  He demonstrated this with a succession of fine saves and keeping the score line in respectable figures. Cockerham then came to life scoring two excellent goals in the space of ten minutes. The first resulted from an interception by George Morris in midfield.  George found himself in acres of space and moved forward before slipping a nice pass to Greg Carter, who made space and moved the ball on to the advancing Andrew Smith who hit a shot equal to the Bare opening goal to reduce the deficit to 3-1.  This was Andrew’s first and long awaited goal in the Cockerham shirt which he then followed up with an equally good strike for his second, earning him the Man of the Match award.   Unfortunately Bare Ranger Red added their fourth in between these two strikes and then a fifth to produce a final score of 5-2.

Certain aspects of Cockerham’s game showed good promise and had they been able to maintain that for the whole of the game the final result might have been different.  Equally had Harry been able to put away his early chance this would have given Cockerham added confidence.  Next weeks game against Craven Wanderers should provide an opportunity to demonstrate that lessons have been learnt before encountering Lancaster the following week.

Goal Scorers: Greg Carter 3 Mark Bevan 1 (P)
Referee: Mr. T. Graham

Oh No! A win and I missed it.  What pleasing news to return home too, well done lads.  Perhaps my harsh words regarding the previous game struck a cord.  Lets hope that you can now continue to build on this success.  With last weeks game postponed, what better than this weeks challenge against Bare Rangers Red to prove a point.  Good Luck.

DUMPED OUT OF THE LFA CUP:
26th September22-20

COCKERHAM 3 BRIDGE FC 9
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Mark Bevan 2 Greg Carter 1
Referee: Mr. T. Cragg
Man of the Match Mark Bevan.

This first round LFA Cup Tie, delayed as a result of a waterlogged pitch last week, kicked-off five minutes early, following an unprecedented team line-up and exchange of handshakes.  Bridge FC, from Rochdale, wasted no time in demonstrating their skills by outclassing and outperforming a Cockerham team that on the day could only field eleven players with no substitutes.  Bridge FC. In exactly the same position possessed a level of fitness that far surpassed that of the Cockerham side and all having fought a tough 2-2 draw in their normal Saturday fixture.  They totally dominated play for seventy-five percent of the match and were leading 5-0 at half time.

They added a further four in the second half with Cockerham able to reply with three of their own.   All three came from crosses from the left flank, two of which were corners.  The first two were met sweetly by the ever busy Mark Bevan and the third a crisp header from Greg Carter.

There were however some positives to be gained, the most rewarding being Keeper Graham making a number of good clean catches and not first parrying the ball. Unfortunately he was responsible for one goal when he spilled a ball that he should have taken cleanly.  A number of players commendably ran their legs off, whilst other made a lesser contribution.  If the team are to succeed this season, fitness levels need to rapidly improve and every player has to play his heart out for the full seventy minutes.  Together you will succeed, divided you will fall.

DIFFICULT CONDITIONS:
11th September 21-00

WESTGATE WANDERERS 0 COCKERHAM 2
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Mark Bevan 1 Matthew Hurst 1
Referee: Mr. R. Gregory
Man of the Match: Andrew Smith

Today’s game was played in difficult conditions, with an increasingly strong wind and at times driving rain.  Immediately prior to the game referee Ryan Gregory lead a minutes silence in memory of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.  Both teams linked arms on opposite sides of the centre circle and together with both sets of supporters fully respected the tribute.

The first half produced a very even performance with both sides failing to convert opportunities, which resulted in a 0-0 score line at half time.

The second half, despite the conditions turned out to be a livelier affair.  Both teams were a lot more determined and at times the quality of football was much improved.  Three minutes after the restart Greg Carter had a good shot well saved by the Westgate keeper.  This seemed to spur on the Westgate team and the Cockerham midfield of Matthew Tucker, Mark Bevan and Andrew Smith worked hard to repel the mounting advances.  The ever busy Mark Bevan was finally on hand to score a good opening goal and give Cockerham a marginal advantage.  Fourteen minutes later Matthew Hurst was well positioned to complete a good Cockerham move, taking his chance well, placing his shot just over the keeper, to produce a final score of 2-0 in favour of Cockerham.

This was Cockerham’s first league win of the season, against a much improved Westgate Wanderers team, providing further evidence that the league will be far more competitive this season.  To succeed teams will have to be committed, determined, focussed and fit.   Cockerham therefore have a lot of work to do in all quarters.  Listen to your coaches and enjoy the journey.

HEYSHAM FIXTURE POSTPONED:
11th September 20-00

The planned fixture against Heysham Blue on Friday the 9th September 2011 was postoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

LACK LUSTRE PERFORMANCE:
7th September 20-45

COCKERHAM 1 CARNFORTH RANGERS 5
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers: Matthew Barton 1
Referee: Mr. T Graham
Man of the Match: Owen Rimmer.

Following Friday’s fixture, expectations were high for an improved Cockerham performance.  When the game got under way it was a revised squad that took to the field with a number of players in different positions, due to only one substitute being available and manager Dave Graham accommodating the return of injured and previously sick players.  Despite the unfamiliar formation the team worked hard and with a degree of determination.  There was not a great deal to choose between the teams during the first half apart from the one Cockerham goal.  Had it not been for the Carnforth keeper,  Cockerham could have been three up.  Greg Carter hit two powerful shots, both of which were dealt with competently by the keeper.  At the other end Josh Graham was on hand to parry a header which was directed to the top corner, following a defensive error.  The Cockerham goal came from the unlikely foot of Matthew Barton who struck a sweetly timed shot from outside the area, leaving  the keeper with no chance.   With the score of 1-0 to Cockerham at half time there was all to play for.

Both teams restarted the second half where they had left off but it was Carnforth who looked the more determine, the subtle changes made to Cockerham during the interval unsettling their rhythm.  Three minutes into the restart Carnforth engineered the break they were looking for and drilled the ball into the corner of the net.  They then went on to head a second goal and take the overall lead.  With the Cockerham forward line lacking any determination or passion and unable to make any impact on the game, manager Dave Graham adopted a high risk strategy by bring Josh out of goal to supplement the strike force and replace him with the diminutive but willing George Briault.  This move had devastating consequences as Carnforth then went on to score a further three goals in ten minutes.

Both Heysham Blue Star and Carnforth Rangers have demonstrated passion, skill and fitness none of which are yet being achieved by the Cockerham team.  A lot of work is required and an opportunity exists for the team to regain some pride in the next fixture against Heysham Blue Star for the second encounter on Friday the 9th September 2011.  Come on Cockerham, you are better than this.

TOUGH START:
6th September 22-00

HEYSHAM BLUE STAR 6 COCKERHAM 0
Lancaster & Morecambe Service to Youth League
Goal Scorers:
Referee: Mr. S. Collins (HBS)
Man of the Match: George Morris.

The opening fixture of the season was played on Friday the 2nd September 2011 against last seasons’ league runners up and was always going to be a difficult opening encounter.  During the pre match warm up Heysham Blue Star looked sharp, fit and hungry for success.  They started as they intended to finish, totally dominating the whole game.  Within the first five minutes they were 1-0 up to a well worked and crisply struck goal.  Four minutes later the score was 2-0 following concerted pressure.  A powerful rising shot was firmly parried by keeper Graham, unfortunately during the ensuing juggling act he came under pressure from an eager Heysham forward and as soon as the ball hit the floor it was in the back of the net.  Josh made amends with a strong save thirty-two minutes into the game immediately prior to the referee calling a premature finish to the first half.  Cockerham, although outclassed had toiled throughout the half to stay in touch and were unlucky to find themselves 2-0 down.

For the first ten minutes of the second half, Cockerham again sustained the Heysham pressure, prior to conceding two well taken goals in two minutes.   The momentum of relentless pressure and well worked Heysham moves was briefly suspended when the talented Josh Graham produced a brilliant double save to receive the applause of everyone in the ground.  Regrettably this was a brief respite, with Heysham adding a further two goals without reply.  The fifth was a powerful header from a well taken corner.  The sixth, well into extra time was the result of a deflection off the unfortunate Daniel Lamb.  The referee immediately blew the whistle for full time having apparently played the extra time to compensate for the shortened first half.

FINAL REHEARSAL:
01 September 21-15

COCKERHAM 1 HIGHGROVE 4
FRIENDLY FIXTURE:
Goal Scorer: Greg Carter
Referee: Tom Graham
Man of the Match: Matthew Hurst.

This was the final friendly fixture prior to the official opening game of the season on Friday the 02nd September 2011.  Drawn away to last season’s  league runners up, Heysham Blue Star, this fixture provided an opportunity to put into practice some the of the lesson  learnt last season.  With only eleven players available, due to holidays, injury and sickness, this however, was always going to be a tough task against this ambitious Highgrove team.

The first half was extremely even with both teams playing some attractive football.  The back four of Tariq Baraka, George Morris, Daniel Lamb and Matthew Hurst worked hard and repelled all Highgrove advances up until the thirty third minute.  The remainder of the team were also linking well, especially Greg Carter and new signing Andrew Smith.  This pair, posed the greatest threat and were unlucky not to penetrate the Highgrove defences, when following a period of interplay between the two, Andrew whipped in a splendid cross, which Greg dived to head strongly, leaving the Highgrove keeper stranded and beaten.  The ball hit the post, bouncing back into play on the opposite side of the goalmouth.  The ball should have been tapped in for the opening goal but regrettably the left flank, of the team, were not alert enough to succeed. The Cockerham defence were undone two minutes prior to half time when they failed to deal with an attack on the right flank and the neat through ball was promptly dispatched into the back of the net leaving keeper Graham with no chance.  This was a cruel blow at a key time of the game.

Cockerham again changed keeper at half time with Josh Whitaker taking over the jersey.  With only eleven players’, the second half was always going to be tough.  Highgrove went two up within six minutes of the restart and continue to pressurise a now tiring defence.   Cockerham rallied briefly when Mark Bevan challenged strongly and embarked on a good run eventually losing the ball, which fell to Greg Carter, who promptly planted it in the back of the net to create a 2-1 score line.  Further Cockerham goals could have come but opportunities were wasted when the correct options were not selected. Goals are goals, regardless of who scores them and the team need to learn to play for one another and not for individual glory. Highgrove were fortunate to score a soft goal and then went on to add a fourth creating a flattering score line given the overall performance of the Cockerham team.

The future will be bright if the team listen and take on board the advice that is given and frequently repeated by the management team.   Good luck for a full season of improved football.

GOOD WORKOUT:
U14 TEAM FIRST FRIENDLY:
24th August 21-30

COCKERHAM 1 POULTON TOWN 2
Goal Scorers: Greg Carter (P)
Referee: Tom Graham
Man of the Match: Matthew Tucker

This was an evenly matched encounter that could have gone either way, providing a valuable workout for both teams prior to the commencement of the new season on Friday the 2nd September 2011. Poulton Town failed to convert a first half penalty that was well saved by keeper Graham. Notwithstanding this event, Cockerham were unfortunate to be a goal down at half time. A good shot which was well covered by Josh was diverted by the unfortunate George Morris passed the stranded keeper into the net.

Changes to the Cockerham team at half time saw the injured George Briault, the smallest member of the team, take up position between the posts. Poulton Town capitalised on this change within two minutes of the restart, floating a good cross from the right in under the bar. Both teams came close to scoring further goals with both keepers making fortunate saves. Greg Carters first goal of the season came as a result of a penalty late into the second half.

This was an impressive first outing indentifying areas of improvement, which can be further developed in the next friendly on Tuesday the 30th August 2011 against Highgrove.
