Lancaster Boys Club v Cockerham: 22nd January 2012

Following last week’s meeting at Galgate between the two teams the return fixture was played today on a cold afternoon with a strong cross wind.

The first ten minutes were fairly even but gradually Boys Club gained control of the game and one of many fluid exchanges of passing saw them open the scoring with a rising shot giving Matthew Denny no chance. Despite rugged defending by Cockerham there was little respite for the reminder of the half which became a rear guard action. Sam Collinson and Ryan Parker in particular had a busy time of it but despite their efforts the skill and precision of Boys Club inevitably told with three more goals being scored before half time, despite good handling and positioning from Matthew Denny. Last week going behind galvanised Cockerham into a spirited response and strong competition for the ball in midfield but this time the considerably larger pitch was used to full advantage by the home side. 4 – 0 at half time to the hosts.

The second half started far more competitively and, despite conceding an early goal Cockerham were giving a decent account of themselves with more pressure on the ball and some impressive attacking sequences. From the Cockerham point of view the highlight was a fine goal from Mathew Gardner following a good free kick from Sam Collinson over the advancing Boys Club defence which saw several Cockerham players in good positions to score. Mathew  struck a rising shot beyond the despairing dive of the Boys Club keeper into the roof of the net . 5 -1 at that point and the chance to achieve respectability beckoned.

Unfortunately Boys Club were able to expose the Cockerham defence with two quick goals on the break where superior numbers told. Very late in the game good work by Cockerham down the right wing led to a cynical foul just on the edge of the penalty area. To his credit the Cockerham manager looked on calmly where Roberto Mancini would have been waving an imaginary red card. The resultant free kick unfortunately flew over the bar. This was followed by another quick breakaway goal by Boys Club and the game finished 8 – 1.

There were some good performances today in parts of the game with Mathew  Gardner not only scoring the goal but hard in the tackle. Sam Collinson working hard at the back and Ryan Parker who looked the pick of the defenders on the pitch with his composure and distribution. Sam and Ryan were jointly named as Man of the Match.

Next week sees another difficult looking away game against high flying Lancaster Youth.

Cockerham v Lancaster Boys Club:  15th January 2011

Cockerham entertained Boys Club at Galgate in the first of consecutive fixtures against them. The pitch survived the forecast overnight frost and was muddy and heavy giving the players quite a challenge. Conditions were cold but with only a light wind all was set for an interesting match.

The visitors started well, applying consistent pressure on the Cockerham goal and were two up in the first seven minutes with neat passing football around the box and clinical finishes left the exposed Edward Jeans no chance of preventing the goals. Historically, against these opponents this would have been the prelude for a landslide – but not today. Cockerham seemed galvanised and suddenly were competing strongly in every challenge all over the pitch and denying the visitors any space to exploit. A darting run through the inside left channel saw the goal open up for Lorcan Alty whose exquisite curling shot beat the Boys Club keeper just inside the post. Within minutes Cockerham drew level with a really fine passing move down the right and a lofted through ball from Tom Hawkins found Lorcan running through who scored again from a tight angle.

Cockerham jubilation was dampened by another goal from Boys Club but the excellent spirit of the team continued and after determined play again from Lorcan, Jake Gould was well placed to apply a fine finish to again bring the scores level. The visitors did not panic and scored two more goals before half time, at least one of which could have been avoided. There could have been more except for a quite brilliant save from Edward Jeans, tipping a point blank range effort over the bar to safety.  Even the Boys Club supporters were applauding that one. Half time came with the score 3 – 5 and what an entertaining half it had been.

The second half proved the old adage “it’s a game of two halves” as, far from building on the excellent play and spirit of the first Cockerham looked disjointed and lacking in ideas. The Cockerham goal was subject to intense pressure from Boys Club and only wasteful finishing, good luck (for Cockerham) and the post prevented further goals for the visitors. Totally against the run of play in a rare foray over the half way line Cockerham were awarded a penalty. This was unselfishly given to Lorcan Alty to take and he completed his hat-trick with a superb spot kick. 4 -5 – could Cockerham push on and get a result?

Sadly this was the beginning of the end as Cockerham continued to toil and Boys Club made good use of the time and space they were given to run in four more goals before the final whistle. The final score 4 -9 was a disappointment to Cockerham but great heart can be taken from the first half display. This was a fitting response to last week’s heavy defeat and hopefully Cockerham can take the positives to next week’s reverse fixture. If they can play with the passion, commitment and intensity seen in the first half today anything is possible.

Man of the match was awarded to Lorcan Alty – well deserved for an excellent display.

Cockerham v Bare Rangers 8th January 2012

The first fixture of 2012 took Cockerham to Morecambe on a damp and chilly Sunday afternoon to play on the impressive 3G surface at Lancaster and Morecambe College.

Bare Rangers were riding high in the league table, with impressive results to date.  From the kick off it was not hard to see with a team loaded with quality players.

After holding out valiantly for 10 minutes against sustained pressure Cockerham conceded the first goal with an unfortunate twist and turn by one of their own players which ended up in the back of the goal.  Bare Rangers dictated the remainder of the first half sustaining a high standard of play mainly in the Cockerham half. They were  rewarded with 5 more goals leading to a half time score line of 6 -0.

The second half saw more excellent play from Bare Rangers with little answer from Cockerham who struggled to get the ball into the oppositions half.  Despite the use of various substitutes further goals were conceded including a penalty kick with the end result being a very disappointing 13 - 0.

Cockerham can play so much better and perhaps the long break from their last match due to bad weather did them no favours at all. It’s also true to say that the perfect pitch favoured the highly polished Bare Rangers team and the game would have been interesting to see on a muddy and sticky pitch at Galgate.

Man of the match for the game went to Tom Hawkins and Daniel Carter who both had strong performances against very impressive opponents.

Bare Rangers Yellow  -  v   Cockerham Juniors

Match Report     -     Sunday 20th November 2011

On a cool but dry and windless afternoon Cockerham visited Bare Yellow and the two teams delivered a cracking match, full of incident and drama right up to the final whistle.

Cockerham had the better of the first ten minutes, pressing forward strongly and opened the scoring with a fortunate goal.  A low powered shot from Theo Parry should have been easily gathered by the home keeper but it slipped between first his ands and then his knees to trickle into the net.  You had to feel for the keeper who remained prostrate face down for several seconds wishing the ground would swallow him up.  Bare Yellow responded well and pressed the Cockerham goal with several dangerous runs down the flanks.  The best of these saw a sure goal saved by a brillian saving tackle from Ryan Parker.  Lorcan Alty proved a real handful to Bare all afternoon with mesmerising runs from midfield.  The first of many such runs saw a fine individual goal beating the keeper low into the corner.  2-0  to Cockerham, Cockerham looked anything but comfortable and Bare Yellow soon pulled a goal back following fine work down the left wing with the scorer cutting inside to beat Edward Jeans low down on the near post.  2-1 to Cockerham at half time.

Following the restart the teams looked pretty equal with chances created by both sides.  Bare equalised with a decisive run into the box and rounded the Cockerham keeper to sore well.  5 minutes later following a well delivered corner by Tom Hawkins the ball was cracked home high into the Bare net by Matthew Gardner.  Cockerham were now playing a high line and looked vulnerable to good play from Bare, although this was balanced by frequent surging runs from Lorcan Alty who set up a number of good chances with well placed through balls.  Bare pressed forward and put the Cockerham goal under a sustained spell of pressure and Matthew Denny produced a string of fine save to keep the out.  Somewhat against the run of play another run from Lorcan saw a good passing move resul from which Sam Green increased the Cockerham lead to 4-2.

With ten minutes to goa ll Cockerham had to do was see the game out but following a free kick from Bare, scrambled away, a fine finish gave Matthew Denny no chance.  By this time the Cockerham supporters were biting their nails and in the final seconds Bare struck the Cockerham bar.  Immediately after the resultant clearance the referee's whistle blew to end an excellent game as a 4 - victory for Cockerham.

This was a good team performance by Cockerham with strong contributions throughout the side.  Lorcan Alty was deservedly Man fo the Match but mentions should also go to Sam Collinson and Ryan Parker at the back.  Despite Bare Yellow's low position in the league they were a good side and played some nice football going forward.  This was a hard earned, but well deserved win.

 Cockerham Jnrs   -   v    -    Carnforth Rangers

Match Report   -   Sunday 13th November 2011

On a cool and breezy afternoon Cockerham (placed 8th in the league) hosted Carnforth Rangers (7th). Following an exceptional away win by Cockerham (5 – 4) earlier in the season there was optimism in the air, only heightened by an early Cockerham goal in the fourth minute from Jake Gould. This was however the high point for Cockerham and was followed by incessant pressure from Carnforth, raiding down the right flank with impunity and creating numerous chances.

Despite some desperate defending and the inspirational heroics of the excellent Edward Jeans in goal Cockerham conceded two goals prior to half time, the first a fine drive from the right edge of the box high into the net and the second a good finish after a goalmouth melee.  Although 2-1 down at half time Cockerham  looked still to be in the game but could count themselves fortunate the margin was not greater.

Cockerham never really got going again after the restart in a half dominated by the visitors and four more goals were conceded giving the Carnforth a deserved 6 -1 victory.

Edward Jeans was deservedly named man of the match, although only on the pitch for the first half.

This defeat leaves Cockerham in 8th place with next week’s game away at Bare Yellow (10th). As Bare Yellow have a game in hand this is a “must win” for Cockerham to stay ahead

Cockerham Jnrs   -   v   Morecambe Hawks

Match Report   -   Sunday 6th November 2011

It was a sunny afternoon as Cockerham welcomed high flying Morecambe to our home turf to see if we could carry on the impressive form that had seen us climb the table in the last few weeks.

Straight from the off you could tell that today's opponents were going to pose a much tougher test than Lancaster Blue did last week. The Morecambe players starting putting the pressure on but time and time again they ran into the brick wall that was Ryan Parker, who had an outstanding game playing at centre back along side Sam Collinson. As the half progressed Cockerham started to grow in confidence and created a few good chances of their own. Good work from Lorcan Alty on his return saw Sam Green with a chance which his hit narrowly wide from a tight angle. the ever industrious Jake Gould was working hard to carve out his own chance and some nice play between him and Lorcan saw the ball fall for Jack Baillie, but his long range effort whistled wide. At the other end a string of saves from the ever impressive Edward Jeans kept the away side at bay.  All in all a pretty even first half saw the boys go in at half time  0-0

The second half started brightly for Cockerham with pushing for an opening goal. Tom Hawkins was outstanding in midfield, breaking up the Morecambe attacks and keeping his passing simple, finding a Cockerham shirt on most occasions.  Although Morecambe had chances and half time sub Mathew Denny was called on to make a few saves, Cockerham never looked like they were hanging on. After a series of Cockerham corners the ball fell to Jack Baillie in the box, he hit it first time on the volley and was unlucky to see his shot come off the crossbar.

The Morecambe forwards were beginning to up the pressure and soon after they scored as their number 7 hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner. It was unfortunate for Cockerham who pressed forward for an equaliser with good work from Dan Carter on the right hand side.  As the boys pressed forward there was a gap at the back and a good cross by the Morecambe winger saw the Morecambe number 7 in space to head home his second from close range. The lads really showed the sort of spirit that is being instilled in them by not collapsing and shipping a load more goals.  They pressed and pressed but unfortunately couldn't break down the Morecambe resistance. Final score Cockerham 0-2 Morecambe

As the final whistle blew there were disappointed faces as Cockerham felt they should have got something out of the game, and they were right. A very strong team performance against a team that had recently beaten us 7-1 was yet another indication of how far we have come as a team. we now look forward to next week.

Lancaster Blue v Cockerham

Match Report – Sunday 30th October 2011

Cockerham started the game at a fast pace, pressing Lancaster from both wings and it took just  8 minutes of play to open the scoring. Following good work down the centre of the pitch Gallacher unselfishly squared the ball to Gould who opened his account for the day slotting the ball home.

Cockerham’s confidence grew as the game progressed and all the boys contributed to a well-disciplined performance. The striking partnership of Gould and Baillie worked well and paid dividends as the match progressed.

Further first half goals were scored by Gould and Baillie. Collinson, strong again in defence, made a positive forward  run towards goal taking the defence out of play and putting Gould in on goal. He then with great finesse chipped the keeper to bag his hat trick and put Cockerham in at half time at  4-0.

The restart saw continued pressure from  Cockerham  constantly probing the Lancaster defence. 5 minutes into the half saw Hawkins put another good corner ball into the box for Green to powerfully head the ball into the back of the net.

Further goals by Gould (2) and Parry followed after Lancaster scored a scrappy goal against the run of play.  Carter made frequent strong runs down the left channel and was rewarded with his hard work when his cross was met well by Gallaher who volleyed the ball high into the roof of the net.

More strong determined football was on display and was rewarded by 2 more goals by Gallacher to get his 2nd half hat trick.

With a couple more minutes remaining on the clock Baillie finished off a fine performance with another well taken goal and the final score of 12-1.

On the day Lancaster Blue, despite home advantage, were no match for a rampant Cockerham who were superior in all departments and fully deserved the margin of victory. Another excellent result away from home!

MATCH REPORT: SUNDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER

COCKERHAM V BENTHAM

2 - 2

Cockerham played a Bentham team that had inflicted a 12-4 defeat on them the previous week, so were hoping for a much improved performance. From the whistle the game was end to end and fast paced. The Cockerham midfield caused Bentham problems, with the 3 central midfielders Theo Parry, Lorcan Alty, and Tom Hawkins dominating the centre of the park with some excellent passing and closing down.

The Cockerham wide players had a great influence on the game. Cameron Gallacher and Sam Green were attacking the Bentham fullbacks with skill and pace and were creating lots of chances which Cockerham just failed to convert. Eventually at last, after a chipped ball from midfield saw Sam Green, showing great pace, run through and neatly pass it past the Bentham keeper. It was no more than Cockerham deserved.

Bentham came back strong and created chances but Cockerham defended well and worked as a unit with Edward Jeans pulling off some great saves to keep the score at 1-0 at half time.

The 2nd half began as exciting with more end to end play. The first 10 minutes saw Will Atkinson and Sam Collinson pull off some great last ditch tackles. Bentham eventually broke a ball over the top and finished well to even the score. The game continued with end to end football with Cockerham creating chance after chance. Jack Baillie and Scott Dey both getting close with good efforts. Bentham also created chances, but some great instinctive shot stopping from Matthew Denny kept the score level. In the final third of the match a cross from the right, somewhat luckily, broke to a Bentham player right in the front of the net and he passed it into the net.

Cockerham did not let their heads go down and carried on playing in the same determind way. Lorcan Alty and Cameron Gallacher  created chances every time they had the ball. Scott Dey was very unlucky not to score when he was tripped right in front of goal (not seen by the Ref)!!!!!!!!!!!

However, in the final minutes, Scott Dey slid a great ball opening up the Bentham defence, Jack Baillie picked up the pass and with great confidence passed the ball into the back of the net! This brought scenes of great jubilation for all from Cockerham.

The game ended 2-2. This was far and away Cockerham`s best game so far, and proved that they can compete with strong teams if they work as a team for the full game.
