SEASON FINALE

MID LANCS COLTS UNDER 9's SUPER LEAGUE 9/5/10

Aspull 4  Cockerham 2

Yet another sunny spring morning where Cockerham found themselves travelling to Aspull to meet yet another team who were in the top half of the table.  Conditions couldn't have been better and the boys looked like they were determined to enjoy their last league game of the season.

The team lined up with Pattinson in goal and Bookless and Saville providing a strong back line.  There was a reshuffle in midfield with Lawrenson moving out to the left and McDougall coming in to centre midfield.  Wilding began on the left with the lively Whiteside up front and Little was substitute.

The game began with both sides playing good football and chances began to be created.  Aspull went one up but Cockerham weren't giving up and they equalized with a cross-shot from Lawrenson which looped over the opposition goalie and into the net.

The game was very even and McDougall was outstanding, breaking up Aspull attacks and playing the ball neatly forward to set up chances for Whiteside and Wilding.

Aspull scored another couple and it was midway into the second half before Cockerham scored another.  Fittingly it was McDougall who got it with a clinical finish from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. The next goal was going to be crucial as Cockerham looked likely to get something from the game, but as they pushed for the equalizer Aspull broke and scored to make it 4-2.

The game was played in excellent spirit, as was the penalty shoot out competition after the match, and credit should go to both teams for the way that the game was played, with passing football being the order of the day.

Man of the Match - Harrison McDougall.

COCKERHAM CRUSHED

MID LANCS COLTS UNDER 9's SUPER LEAGUE 2/5/10

Cockerham 1  Leyland Albion Red 8

Cockerham travelled to Leyland aiming to end a run of defeats and once again found themselves up against a team who were in the top four of the league, who would provide a stern test of the teams mettle.

The game got underway with both teams struggling to maintain possession.  Cockerham had the better of the first five minutes until a hopeful long range effort went through stand in keeper Lawrenson's legs and into the net.  This was unfortunate as he had made some excellent saves up until this point.

Another goal came soon after with a fiece drive that the keeper could only parry into the net.  The score once again as in recent games didn't really reflect the good work and effort that Cockerham were putting in.

Pattinson arrived and went into his usual position in goal allowing Lawrenson to move out into midfield with Connor Little and David Jeans.  William Bookless and Kieran Saville were once again defending well and Harrison McDougall and Oliver Whiteside were working hard up front.  At half time  it was 4-0 to the home side and the second half unfortunately followed a similar pattern.  Cockerham scored an excellent goal when Lawrenson broke down the left wing and crossed for Whiteside to slot home cooly.  A goal was nothing more than they deserved and although the final score was disheartening, the boys once again continued to try and play good football.

Man of the Match - Kieran Saville.

COCKERHAM FAIL AGAINST DIVISION LEADERS

MID LANCS COLTS UNDER 9's SUPER LEAGUE 25/4/10

Cockerham 0   Euxton Orange 5

It was like deja vu on Sunday as Cockerham, for the second time in a week, found themselves losing a game in which they played some excellent football.

After two games in a week that the team lost 4-0 and 5-0 respectively you could be forgiven for thinking that the boys were not playing too well, but in both games the opposite was true, with the overall standard of football being very high.

There was a change of personnel in defence as William Lawrenson was moved in to allow Kieran Saville to have a go in midfield and Lewis Pattinson returned in goal.  Connor Little was in his usual position on the left and David Jeans patrolled the right side of midfield.  In the centre forward position Harrison McDougall was keen to grab a couple of goals.  John Wilding was substitute.

It was always going to be a tough game, meeting the team who were top of the League and have only lost once this season, but as the game got underway Cockerham started brightly, trying to attack whenever they could.  Unfortunately, the first two goals came only five minutes into the game when Euxton scored from breakaways as Cockerham pushed forward.  With a couple of words from the management the defenders tightened up and got more help from the midfield which prevented any more goals before half time.  Lewis Pattinson was having an outstanding game in goal, pulling off several brave saves.

The second half got under way with Cockerham putting Euxton under pressure once again.  A series of corners were won in succession but no one could force the ball over the line.  The Euxton defenders, true to form, were in no mood to concede a goal.  Once again it was Cockerham who conceded a goal after a penalty was awarded against them.  Lewis nearly pulled off a great save, but the power beat him.  Two more goals followed and the game finished with another disappointing score line which the boys didn't deserve.

Man of the Match - Lewis Pattinson

 UNDER 9's  SAY 'GOOD LUCK'

The under 9's and their parents would like to wish Jonathan Whitford-Bartle (Benji's dad) GOOD LUCK on Sunday as he's off to run in the London Marathon.

Go Jonathan!!

MID LANCS COLTS LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL 21/4/10

COCKERHAM 0        BAC/EE  4

On a sunny spring evening a large crowd who had travelled from far and wide gathered to watch the much anticipated league cup semi final.  With Cockerham having produced some of their best performances this season in this competition they were rightly confident and excited at the possibly of reaching their first cup final.

The team lined up in a familiar 2-3-1 formation designed to put the emphasis on attacking the opposition team.  Benji Whitford-Bartle was brought in to the goalkeeping position after some fine performances earlier in the season.  The defensive line consisted of the ever dependable Bookless and Saville with the trio of Jeans, Little and Lawrenson providing a formidable midfield ahead of them.  Wilding completed the line up in attack with McDougall unlucky to be substitute, but ready to come on and do a job wherever he was needed.

The game began with the home side on the attack and they could have opened the scoring within the first five minutes after Little headed just over the bar from a Lawrenson corner.  The crowd were buzzing after a great start, anticipating an exciting game of football.

A strong BAC side were not going to be rolled over though and they opened the scoring with a slightly fortuitous goal in off the post.  Although coming under increasing pressure Cockerham never gave up on their passing game and they were unlucky to fall further behind when the referee gave a free kick for hand ball on the edge of the box.  Whitford-Bartle had no chance of a save as the BAC player blasted the ball into the back of the net.  Another BAC goal followed soon after to take the score to 3-0 going into half time.

The second half was a different story.  With Lawrenson dropping into defence, Cockerham began to get a toe-hold in the game and they were unlucky not to get on the score sheet.  Unfortunately BAC scored again after a shot which seemed to hit both posts and the crossbar before rolling over the line.

The match ended with a 0 - 4 score line and a disappointed team and crowd, but, all the boys should be proud of their efforts, keeping going until the final whistle and always trying to play good footbal.

Man of the match - Benji Whitford-Bartle and John Wilding

 COCKERHAM STUMBLE

MID LANCS COLTS SUPER LEAGUE

GREGSON LANE 3   COCKERHAM 2  (18/4/10)

Cockerham travelled to Gregson Lane on Sunday hoping for a reversal of the result following the teams encounter earlier in the season.

The boys got off to a great start with David Jeans showing some dazzling skills down the right wing.  Oliver Whiteside's pace and sharp passing from William Lawrenson and Connor Little soon had Gregson Lane under pressure.  Cockerham's first goal was the result of a superb piece of individual play from David Jeans who continued to torment the Gregson defence.  At the back, John Wilding and William Bookless supported by goalkeeper Harrison McDougall, continued to deal with any Gregson attack, but four minutes before half time Gregson equalised.

Cockerham started the second half attacking the Gregson goal but Gregson somehow scored 2 quick breakaway goals within a 4 minute spell.  Undeterred, Cockerham stepped up the pace and maximum effort from all the boys produced a chance for Connor Little to thump home goal number 2.  Again, all the pressure was on the Gregson goal, but unfortunately the equalising goal remained elusive.

The final score didn't reflect the great football and tremendous effort from each of the boys.  Well done boys!

Man of the match - Connor Little

 U9 SEMI FINAL CUP DATE:

The U9 Team have reached the semi final of the Mid Lancashire Colts Junior Football League Cup.  The game against BAC/EE Preston will kick-off at 18-15hrs on Wednesday the 21st April 2010 at Cockerham Village Hall.

Come along and cheer them on.

This achievement fullfills one of the Management Teams objectives, with the second still a reality with the right team performance.  The first was to have a good cup run the second to be within the top six in the league.

Congratulations to all concerned with the cup run and good luck in the semi final on Wednesday evening.  Fifth or sixth league position is still achievable so keep producing those good performances.

MID LANCS COLTS SUPER LEAGUE

Cockerham 1  Tarleton 4    (14/4/10)
Cockerham went into this match expecting a hard game after a bruising encounter earlier in the season that Cockerham had narrowly won.

As the game got underway both teams were battling to get decent possession of the ball.  With the advantage of bigger boys in midfield the trio of Jeans, Little and Lawrenson were struggling to get their usual passing game going which meant that Wilding was starved of the ball up front.

On several occasions McDougall and Bookless in defence were left outnumbered trying to defend against opposition breakaway attacks and with Tarleton gradually gaining the upper hand it was a surprise when Cockerham broke away and scored the opening goal.  It came from a loose ball in midfield picked up by Lawrenson who srtode forward and struck a sweet shot from just outside the penalty area which went under the keeper.

After conceding the goal against the run of play Tarleton redoubled their efforts and it wasn't long before the defensive line of McDougall and Bookless was breached with a breakaway goal from the visitors.

The second half continued in the same vein with Tarleton having most of the ball and Cockerham struggling to find any fluency.  It wasn't long before the home side went behind to another breakaway goal.  The Cockerham boys contined to try their best but two more goals followed in quick succession and the game was over before Cockerham could reply.

Although it was a hard game the boys deserve credit for keeping going to the very end and never giving up.

Man of the match - Benji Whitford-Bartle.

 HONOURS EVEN

Cockerham 1  Eccleston & Heskin 1 (11/4/10)

After their encounter earlier in the season which Cockerham narrowly won, this match was always likely to be a close affair.  The first half was evenly contested with both sides having chances to open the scoring.  John Wilding was again causing problems for the opposition defense with Oliver Whiteside and David Jeans pushing down the wings at every opportunity.

In defense William Bookless and Harrison McDougall were coping well even though they were outnumbered several times on the break by the Eccleston strikers.

The second half began much the same as the first before a change in personnel and tactics brought a breakthrough.  Kieran Saville was brought in to the defense allowing McDougall to move up front with Wilding moving to the right.  It was Wilding's cross which was deftly steered into the net by McDougall that broke the deadlock.

Unfortunately the lead was short lived as Eccleston scored with five minutes to go.  Cockerham came under pressure but managed to hold out and in the end the honours were even.

Man of the match, Harrison McDougall.

GARSTANG FOOTBALL CLUB MASCOT:

Congratulations to Robert Bevan, who is the lucky winner of the competiition to be the Garstang F.C. Mascot at their Lancashire Amateur Shield Cup Final, to be played at the L.F.A. Headquarters, the County Ground, Leyland on Friday 16th April 2010.

A total of three Cockerham JFC players entered the competition and Robert was the lucky name drawn from the hat.  Commiserations to the other two candidates.  Maybe there will be a further opportunity for you on another occasion.

Have a great day on the 16th April 2010 Robert.

 CONVINCING COCKERHAM VICTORY:
MID LANCS COLTS U9'S SUPER LEAGUE   28th MARCH
BRINSCALL 0  COCKERHAM 5

Cockerham travelled to Brinscall on Sunday hoping to bounce back from a poor result last week at Myerscough.  A few changes in the line up meant that Wilding was moved up to centre forward and Jeans was drafted in to the right midfield slot.

As the game got underway Cockerham soon got into their passing game putting Brinscall under pressure with Little and Jeans pushing down the flanks and Lawrenson driving through the middle.  Wilding's intelligent movement kept the Brinscall defenders busy and Cockerham were soon ahead through Lawrenson's long range shot which dipped under the bar.

Saville and McDougall provided a strong defensive line along with Pattinson in goal, repelling all that the opposition threw at them.  Soon Cockerham scored again with Wilding breaking free to score with a powerful shot giving the Brinscall keeper no chance.  By now Cockerham were in full control and another goal soon followed after the break as Little scored after a mazy run through the opposition defence.  Bookless came off the bench to add a fourth and a late goal from Wilding sealed the result.  Man of the Match was Connor Little.

With performances like this the boys should be confident of finishing the season strongly and getting through to the cup final.

 JUNIORS VISIT GARSTANG FC:

As part of his birthday party, the son of Garstang FC's Chairman invited some of his football friends down to The Riverside ground to watch Garstang Reserves play Eagley Reserves in a West Lancashire League game.

Prior to the game, they were introduced to the manager, Paul Bailey, the team captain, Joe Miller, and some of the players.

The picture shows the boys, who mainly play for Cockerham Juniors, sat in the home team dressing room with Joe (L) and Paul.

After a full tour, the boys stayed on to watch a good game which Garstang won 3-1. They all hope, one day, to play at GFC and thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

Garstang FC would be delighted to welcome any other children, who want to experience a matchday, to The Riverside. As they say, 'These kids are our future'.

COCKERHAM U10's SLAY GIANTS TO WIN THE LEAGUE !
Cockerham 2 Lancaster Giants 0

The final day of the League season arrived and the boys enjoyed more good weather for their game against Lancaster Giants. Their opposition had improved significantly since the earlier meeting in the season and this had been seen through a run of four straight wins.

The formula was simple for the boys today - nothing other than a win would guarantee the league title.

Before the match the boys all had their hair coloured with red and white stripes to match their kit, and had a series of team photos taken. When the whistle blew for the start of the game however the boys were clearly up for the challenge. The first half performance was possibly the best the boys have played all year - it was just remarkable that the score at half time was 0-0. The passing at times was exquisite. Sam in the centre of midfield just kept the ball moving and Cockerham in possession. Alex and Ben were frightening down the flanks and every credit must be given to the Lancaster team for keeping Cockerham out.

On the rare occassions that the Giants got out of their half the rock solid defensive partnership of James and Harry meant that Benjamin's goal was never really under any pressure. When Benjamin was called upon he confidently cleared his area and distributed the ball well to his team mates.

As the half went on, Cockerham were getting the ball into the Lancaster box more and more often, with lots of corners and crosses peppering the goal mouth. Joe was a constant threat but the ball would just not quite fall for him to stick it in the back of the net.

As half time approached Callum and Josh came off the bench and got involved immediately. Callum with some determined tackles to win the ball and runs to build attacks, and Josh looking to use skillful touches to play in team mates. With a little frustration setting in just before half time Cockerham had two great long shots from Ben and then Alex after a mazy dribble that both just rose over the bar.

At half time Tyler also came on and the boys continued to dominate play. With patience starting to run thin from Coaches and Parents alike their was a huge sigh of relief that could be heard in Garstang midway through the second half. It was Alex who picked the ball up midway into the Lancaster half beat his man and as he approached the penalty area he slid the ball across the box to Tyler whose first touch control was assured and his shot true and firm to see the ball fire past the keeper low into the bottom corner of the net.

With the subs wanting to run onto the pitch and mob the goalscorer it was clear what the goal meant to the boys.

Lancaster were still struggling to create any of their own pressure and the one way traffic continued throughout the second half. The Giants brave resistance was finally overcome in the last few minutes when a corner from the right taken by Ben was met perfectly by Alex as he rose on the six yard line and his downward header was past the goalkeeper before he could react.

Let the celebrations begin.... and celebrate the boys did - With Queen's 'We are the Champions' playing in the background the boys sprayed themselves with Champagne (sort of) and tucked into a well deserved treat of chocolates, home baking and other goodies.

Under 10's celebrate League Championship

A fantastic team performance from a fantastic team who have had a fantastic season. We are all really proud of you.

COCKERHAM U10's SHOW SKILL & SPIRIT IN TABLE TOPPING CLASH
Cockerham 0 Lancaster City Youth 0

It was a sunny morning on the day of the 'big match'. For some time it has seemed that this match of top v second may decide who wins the league, and the tense battle today was worthy of the season long wait. A large crowd that had found the football an interesting distraction from the car boot sale were treated to a fine spectacle. Whilst not a classic, the game had the feel of a cup final and both teams played their hearts out to win.

Earlier in the season Lancaster had been the only team to beat Cockerham in the League. We had been caught out by a flying centre forward who latched onto some good long balls. Over the last couple of training sessions, the Cockerham boys had been working on how to counter this threat, and today they put all of that practice into a great performance.

The first half was full of 'one on one' battles all over the park and most of the game was played in midfield. Chances did come and Joe and Alex both had good shots blocked whilst the Lancaster keeper also made a good save from Ben's rasping shot from the right hand side.

With the sides evenly matched - Lancaster kept trying to force Cockerham back, and midfield tenacity from Callum and later Sam restricted chances. At the back James and Harry were immense - scrapping when they needed to, and having a calm head to clear with good passes when they could.

Inevitably Lancaster worked a couple of half chances, the best of these was a rocket shot from just outside the box, and Cockerham had Benjamin to thank for a remarkable diving save to his right to keep the scores level at half time.

In the second half Lancaster tried hard to pile on the pressure knowing that they needed a win, and Cockerham had to work harder than they had all season to stay in the game. This left Tyler up front on his own, and in difficult times, he worked really hard to keep the opposition under pressure. Alex and Ben really put in the miles to provide defensive cover, and also an attacking threat.

The second half again had few chances with a real competitive spirit to the game in all positions and with most of the play in midfield. With a few minutes to go Joe got the ball with his back to goal and had a great turn and shot which went just wide of the post.

The final major action of the game was a goal mouth scramble in the Cockerham penalty area but between, Benjamin, James, Harry and Callum we managed to get the ball clear.

After a fantastic result the team now know that if they win their last game, they will win the League. Well played boys - all the Parents agreed that the whole team should share the man of the match award this week for a great team performance.

LADS SHOW DADS HOW IT'S DONE !
Lads 5 Dads (and mum and sisters....) 4

With the late disappointment of the cancellation of the big match, the U10's set up an impromptu game of lads v dads. All the pre-match chat of 'a bit of fun' soon resulted in the type of competitive spirit that some of the Dad's last showed when at school. The Dads it was who set off stongest with Messer's Deed and Davis looking particularly enthusiastic. Benjamin was needed to deny a couple of early chances with good saves. As the first half progressed it became increasingly clear where Joe got his 'fox in the box' inclinations from, as Phil seemed very keen to hang around the penalty box rather than track back. Where Joe has got is first touch from however was less obvious....

It also became clear where James got his defensive strength from with both Jill and Lucy playing heroically in the heart of the parents defence. Also no surprise was how Harry and Tyler have come to like a tackle, with Chris and James looking to dominate in midfield. With Jim Brown playing in his steel toecaps it is maybe more surprising where Sam has inherited his silky touch and skill from.

When the Dads did break the deadlock it was Neil who found the back of the net and his celebration resembled Ravanelli at his best with the shirt going over the head. A second goal soon followed for the Dads as they rolled back the years. And so it was 2-0 at half time.

With no oxygen available for the older generation at half time it was no surprise that in the second half the better fitness levels and first touch from the boys started to tell. Pressure started to mount before the ball fell to Joe in the 6 yard box for him to reduce the deficit. Soon after a cross from the left by Ben was handled in the area, and Joe grabbed the ball to bury the second from the spot. With Chris operating in goal it became clear why he was a coach and not a player - a fact that was further underlined when he ventured out on pitch later in the game.

With Alex and brother Craig moving the ball well, and Harry, Callum and James operating as ball winners and Josh and Sam helping to create chances. The goals in the later stages of the game were a bit of a blur to be honest (meaning I cannot remember who got these) but I think at one stage the Parents thought they had won under the 'next goa'ls the winner rule' however the boys were playing to a different set of rules and by the time Fergie time had run out - the boys had run out winners.

Great fun everyone - hope you all enjoyed it and we look forward to taking on Lancaster City Youth when the game is rearranged.

U10's TURN ON THE STYLE FOR MUMS ON MOTHERING SUNDAY:
Lancaster Boys Club Blue 0 Cockerham U10's 5

With the boys having made cakes, cards and breakfast for their Mum's in the morning the U10's wanted to play well for their Mums on a nice day at Willow Lane Community Primary School in Lancaster. In truth the result was never in much doubt as Benjamin between the posts had to keep himself busy with the opposition not having a shot on target in the whole game.

With the game being played in the attacking half it was always going to be a case of when and how many the team would score. On a narrow pitch finding space was difficult to start with although the passing was some of the best the boys have managed all season.  The chances kept coming but it took a while to break the deadlock.

It was Joe who got on the scoresheet first. From a corner taken by Ben the ball fell to Joe's feet in a crowded penalty box, and he showed good composure to finish strongly. Soon after Alex come off the bench to find himself in space on the right. Sam found him well with one of many good passes, and Alex did the rest by spotting the keeper being out of position and passing the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Before half time the boys created a number of other chances most notably were two great headers from corners. The first saw Harry attack a right wing corner and bullet a header towards goal only for it to hit the goaly and get cleared. The second from a left wing corner was met beautifully by Joe and was destined to find the back of the net before it was cleared by a defender standing on the far post.

At half time we made some more changes that saw Sam and James both spending time up front. Sam came really close to scoring the goal the team wanted him to when he flicked a long ball past the keeper only to see his effort come back off the post. The third was scored in the first minute of the second half when Ben picked the ball up on the half way line ran past a couple of defenders before shooting in from the edge of the box.

With Callum whom won man of the match linking up brilliantly with Alex down the right hand side the next goal did not take long to come. Alex found himself with the ball outside the box and a number of defenders between him and goal. A drop of the shoulder later and a firm shot to the far corner and Cockerham were 4-0 up.

With Josh growing in confidence in recent weeks, and playing today in midfield and defence he passed the ball into midfield where Ben was fouled just outside the box. The freekick taken by Ben went like a rocket into the bottom corner. This result will keep the boys top of the league with our next game at home to Lancaster City Youth likely to be the season decider.

Well done again lads.

COCKERHAM 5 STAR PERFORMANCE KEEPS THEM TOP:
Cockerham U10's 5 Morecambe Youth Colts 0

On a bright sunny day at Cockerham a new look U10's lineup had more than enough to beat a determined Morecambe Youth Colts team. With normal widemen, Ben and Alex starting on the Bench, Harry and Tyler were left to work hard up and down the flanks. Harry was particularly effective at the start of the game with regular passing between himself Sam and Josh causing Morecambe problems.

Early chances fell to Harry, Josh and Sam before Cockerham broke the deadlock with a good run and cross shot from Harry being turned in by Tyler poaching at the back post. A second came before half time after new defensive pair Ben and Alex came on. It was Ben who turned in Tyler's corner with his first touch of the game.

At half time Callum having had a a good first half went 'in nets' for the second. The early part of the second half saw the Cockerham midfield of James, Josh and Harry controlling the game and playing well with Man of the match Sam Brown who's exquisite skill up front only missed the goal he deserved.

With Morecambe struggling to create chances, and Benjamin W looking very comfortable in defence and midfield, it was only a matter of time before Cockerham scored again. As soon as Alex returned to midfield he found himself on the scoresheet not once but twice with two similar goals where his trickery on the ball enabled him to beat a couple of players, create some space and drill the ball low into the bottom corner.

The scoring was concluded with Tyler just as it started turning in a cross from the right. This was a good performance for each of the boys as most of them were playing in new positions - well done.

FINAL HOME GAME!  COCKERHAM 4 CRAVEN WANDERERS 0.  SUNDAY 18TH APRIL 2010:

APRIL 19TH O5-00HRS

The penultimate game of the season saw a return to the Les Blackburn Memorial ground and some fine controlled football from both sides.  The lush surface suppressed the excessive bounce of the ball, experienced in Friday night’s game, with the teams producing some fine ground passing moves.

The first half comprised of end to end football with Cockerham creating the better chances, only to find Craven bravely defending, or shots screaming just wide of the post or over the bar. On the occasions that Craven did create opportunities, the defence of George Morris, Matthew Barton, John Challioner and George Briault held firm.  Matthew Barton was again solid sweeping everything in his path.

Cockerham’s first goal eventually materialised after fifteen minutes when Greg Carter made a strong run down the right wing leaving the opposition in his path.  The cross was perfect, finding Josh Whitaker, who was happy to forcefully hit the ball into the back of the net. This was lovely football lads and fully justified the half time score of Cockerham 1 Craven Wanderers 0.

The second half was similar with Craven controlling more of the play. They were now on occasions penetrating the Cockerham defence and causing some anxious moments.  Matthew Barton back tracked well to block a shot at the feet of the attacker for a corner.  George Briault also covered a tremendous amount of ground, again back tracking, only to trip while executing the tackle leaving Craven with a clear chance.  Keeper Graham made a superb diving save at the feet of the attacker as he released his shot, managing to smother the ball whilst surrounded by three eager forwards. Fine goalkeeping Josh.

The second Cockerham goal came from a well taken Daniel Lamb corner just on fifty-five minutes.  John Challioner, who had moved up onto the edge of the box, flicked the ball forward to find Mark Bevan, who drove his shot into the net.  Josh Whitaker then went agonisingly close, following a fine controlled weaving move, only to crash his shot against the underside of the bar. Josh made amends on sixty minutes when he received well placed pass from Mark Bevan from the left and made no mistake this time, directing the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Josh Whitaker received the Man of the Match award for his performance today.

The final goal was scored by Greg Carter who benefitted from a defensive mix up.  George Briault made a positive run down the left wing and put in a good low cross which caused a misunderstanding between the keeper and defender.  The ball ran loose at the far post where Greg was on hand to blast it into the net.   Final score Cockerham 4 Craven Wanderers 0.

A much improved all round performance lads.  Well done.  Can you repeat this for the final league game of the season, away to Bare Rangers Yellow next Sunday?

DETERMINED PERFORMANCE! CARNFORTH 1 COCKERHAM 3 FRIDAY 16TH APRIL 2010:

APRIL 17TH 05-15HRS

Cockerham travelled to Carnforth for this Friday evening kick-off game hoping to avenge the one nil defeat they suffered nearly a month ago.  On a gloriously sunny evening they started the game well moving the ball from wing to wing and exerting all the pressure.  Both sides were clearly experiencing difficulties with ball bounce, on a pitch that had dried out and was now hard due to the welcome sun all week.

A month ago Carnforth scored their goal within the first minute of the game.  Cockerham almost reversed the honours, when Josh Whitaker made a good run down the left wing from the first whistle, crossing well to Mark Bevan whose overhead scissor kick was saved at the foot of the post by the Carnforth keeper.  This near miss and a lack of ball control set the tone for the reminder game.

Cockerham did open their account after four minutes when Matthew Barton broke up a rare Carnforth attach, made ground prior to releasing a neat pass to Owen Rimmer who found Greg Carter on the right wing.  Greg beat two players then over hit his cross, on a pitch that was narrower than the normal full side pitch, to find Harry Marshall on the opposite wing.  Harry crossed the ball to find Mark Bevan, who this time buried the ball in the back of the net.  Mark nearly scored his second goal a few minutes later when a well taken corner by Daniel Lamb found Mark rising to direct his header onto the crossbar.

Cockerham’s second goal did come just before the half time whistle when Daniel Lamb received a through ball directly to his feet, giving the keeper no chance to stop his well directed strike.  Half time score Carnforth 0 Cockerham 2.

Carnforth adopted a more determined start to the second half, which they maintained throughout.  This together with the narrow score line introduced a certain anxiousness about the Cockerham play, contriving to make the task harder than it should have been and caused nervousness’ within the ranks of Cockerham’s loyal supporters.

Carnforth came close to scoring on fifty-five minutes, when keeper Graham, save well from a neatly taken header.  It was in fact a header that undid Cockerham a minute later when Carnforth beat Cockerham to the ball bounce and nodded in for a deserved goal.  Carnforth remained determined throughout pressing for the equaliser.  They however suffered a set back, just minutes from the final whistle, when Greg Carter made strong determined advances down the right flank cutting into the penalty area only to be brought down by a Carnforth defender.  Both the referee and linesman pointed immediately to the spot. Mark Bevan, ace penalty taker, stepped up to produce a final score line of Carnforth 1 Cockerham 3.  Man of the Match went to George Briault, who battled tirelessly having taken two nasty knocks, one in each half.

Both sides showed great determination but failed to adapted to the summer pitch conditions where heading skills and ball control will become an ever increasing necessity if success is to be competently gained.

CHAMPIONS ELECT!  COCKERHAM O LANCASTER CITY 3 TUESDAY 13TH APRIL 2010:

APRIL 14 05-15HRS

Oh! what a difference forty eight hours makes.  From the gloriously warm sunshine of Sunday, we almost returned to thermal attire for this Tuesday evening home game against Lancaster City.  From the goal sprees of the previous three games it was time for Cockerham to dig deep and demostrate real endeavour in this hard fought, physiclal game, which was admirably refereed by Mr. Ronny Beals.  He stamped his authority on the game from the onset and together with the two teams produced an excellant game of football.

The game started at a fast pace with each side attempting to showcase their individual skills.  The first goal came from a well executed move from mid field by the Lancaster number ten who played a carefully weighted ball into the path of their number fifteen, who gave keeper Graham no chance with his well taken goal, after five minutes of play.  Two minutes later Cockerham came close to equalising with a fine passing move that penertrated the Lancaster defence.  Jamie McManus made a run on the right wing and flashed a cross into the path of Greg Carter whoes shot just screamed over the bar.  This was rapidly followed by a cross from Mark Beven. who this time found the head of Greg who was able to direct a powerful header towards goal but over the top.

Lancaster City now began to dominate play with significnat success down the right flank.  The number ten and number fifteen again combined to produce Lancasters second goal on fifteen minutes. Cockerham remained determined and responded from the restart when Owen Rimmer intercepted and crossed to Mark Bevan who flashed a header just wide of the post.  Cokerham were now coming under constant pressure with the defence of George Morris, John Challioner, Matthew Barton and Tarqi Baraka all working hard to contain the scoreline.  They were ably assisted by the constant running of Mark Bevan and Owen Rimmer, with Keeper Graham producing a string of fine saves. Twice in the closing minutes of the first half Josh prevented Lancaster adding to their total. First, bravely at the feet of an advancing forward and secondly with a diving save to his right.  Half time score; Cockerham 0 Lancaster City 2.

The second half was all pressure from Lancaster preventing Cockerham from establishing their flowing game. The Cockerham defence worked hard and with great determination to thwart the Lancaster attacks.  Matthew Barton remained strong and swept away everything in his path.  They were however unable to prevent the third goal which was headed in from a corner after forty-five minutes. For the remainder of the game the Cockerham defence held firm with keeper Graham once again making a superb diving save, preventing a certain goal.  Josh Graham received the Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance. Final score Cockerham 0 Lancaster City 3.

Yes Cockerham you were able to rise to the occassion and give Lancaster City a hard fought game.  Well done to all the lads, particuarly the defence.  You were beaten by a well drilled, skillful team that were better on the day.  Good luck to Lancaster City in their efforts to secure the League title.

SUNSHINE ALL THE WAY! BARE RANGERS BLUE 2 COCKERHAM 9 SUNDAY 11TH APRIL 2010:

APRIL 12TH 20-20HRS

On this wonderfully sunny afternoon Cockerham visited Bare Rangers Blue at Ryelands Park Lancaster and turned in a sunshine performance.  Cockerham went one goal up after one minute following a penalty spot kick.  Josh Whitaker received the ball immediately following the kick-off and beat two players prior to entering the box, where upon he was brought down.  The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.  Josh stepped up and fired a powerful shot into the back of the net.  The first eight minutes was all oneway traffic with Cockerham nearly going two up after Owen Rimmer intercepted a Bare pass in mid field and sent Harry Marshall down the left wing.  His excellant cross was met by Mark Beven with the Bare keeper doing well to turn it away for a corner.  The corner was well defended by Bare Blue who worked the ball forward and to the righthand side of the pitch where one of their forwards gathered the ball and set off on a fast run stretching the Cockerhm defence.  He hit a strong looping shot which hit the roof the net.

Cockerham were again awarded a penalty after nineteen minutes.  Mark Bevan stepped up and drove his shot into the roof the net.  This was followed by another goal after twenty-four minutes when Harry Marshall again turned provider on the left wing with Josh Whitaker tucking away a strong shot.  The final goal of the first half was scored on twenty-eight minutes by Jamie McManus who intercepted a pass in the Bare penalty area following a fluffed goal kick and gleefully placed the ball into the net.  This was Jamies first game following a long lay off through injury.  Welcome back Jamie.

The first half ended with Bare Rangers pressurising the Cockerham goal with keeper Graham making a brave save a the feet of an advancing forward.  Half time score Bare Rangers Blue 1 Cockerham 4.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Owen Rimmer continueing the goal spree.  Owen collected the ball on the edge of the Bare area on forty-two minutes and thundered a shot into the roof the net.  Bare Blue, however were not prepared to surrender and broke away causing keeper Graham to make double saves a the feet of advancing forwards.  The second save was particulary brave as he hurt his hip whilst making the first save.  He recovered without attention to the complete the game.

Jamie McManus then went close, hitting the post and was again on hand to turn in the cross which immediately followed at fifty-four minutes.  Bare Blue then broke away and scored a well deserve second goal on fifty-seven minutes.   The seventh Cockerham goal came as a result of a well worked move.  This commenced with a long throw in from Owen Rimmer which was recewived by Greg Carter, who made ground prior to crossing into the box, with Daniel Lamb taking the cross and slotting the ball into the net at fifty-nine minutes.  Josh Whitker then turned provider sending Mark Bevan through to claim his second goal on sixty-three minutes.  The final goal was scored by John Challioner who gave a sterling performance in defence but had now been moved to the forward line.  John took a cross from Mark Beven and scored on sixty-six minutes.  John's overall performanace won him Man of the Match.

The final act came from the Bare Rangers Blue keeper who prevented Matthew Barton from scoring by turning his strongly hit shot onto the bar for an excellant save.  Final score Bare Rangers 2 Cockerham 9

This was a strong Cockerham performance and a joy to watch on such a splendid afternoon.  Well done lads.  Can you now repeat your last three performances by giving Lancaster City, league champions elect, a good game on Tuesday evening the 13th April 2010 when Cockerham host their visit?

MAGNIFICIENT SEVEN! COCKERHAM 7 BARE RANGER YELLOW 2.  FRIDAY 9TH APRIL 2010:

APRIL 10TH 06-30HRS

The returning party of seven players who gained notable success playing in the Spainish Copa Marbella International Tournament, arrived home at mid day on Friday to rejoin the remainder of the squad for this home league fixture in the evening against Bare Rangers Yellow.

This proved to be a highly competative game with no quarter given by either side.  The game got off to a phrenectic start with Bare Yellow opening the scoring in the opening minute.  The ball fell to their number ten who only had one thought.  He headed towards goal at speed and hit a cracking shot into the net.  Play was now switching from end to end until Owen Rimmer intercepted the ball in mid field, made some ground and sent a through pass into the path of Josh Whitaker, who ran onto it, controlled it and hit a splendid shot for the equalising goal, after eight minutes.

End to end football then resumed with Greg Carter hitting a trade mark shot just wide of the post, followed shortly afterwards by Harry Marshall who just clipped the post following some good passing moves by the Cockerham team.  Play then switched rapidly to the other end where Bare Yellow headed the ball onto the post for what had seemed a certain goal.  Bare continued to maintain the pressure with keeper Graham flinging himself to his right to parry a goal bound shot, which was subsequently scrambled away by the Cockerham defence.

Cockerham now began to gain control of the mid field and establish some fluent passing moves, which brought about a well taken goal by Harry Marshall after twenty-seven minutes.  Bare Yellow responded with a further attach which once again had keeper Grapham making an excellant save.  Greg Carter then extended the home side lead after twenty-nine minutes.  Bare Rangers Yellow never gave up with both players and supporters continually urging the side on.  All were reward with a well taken goal by their number nine after thirty-two minutes. This was followed by another Cockerham goal on thirty-three minutes by Mark Bevan.  Mark dribbled around three players before placing his shot, only to see it cannon against the post.  He was there for the rebound and tapped it into the net. Half time score Cockerhm 4 Bare Ranger Yellow 2.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Greg Carter scoring with a stunning shot after forty-three minutes. Tarqi Baraka then got onto the score sheet after forty-five minutes. Louis Hadfield won a free kick on the edge of the Bare area and placed his kick neatly into the box for Tarqi, who was awarded Man of the Match for his all round performance, to complete the finish.  This was followed by the final goal of the game resulting from a well taken corner on the left side by Josh Whitaker who found Daniel lamb at the far post for a scrambled tap in at fifty-five minutes.  The game concluded with the Bare Keeper making an excellant save during the closing minutes.

Final Score Cockerham 7 Bare Rangers Yellow 2.  Bare Rangers fought with spirit and endeavour, never letting their heads drop.  As for Cockerham.  They continued to exploit the passing game, gaining just results.  Congratulations to all concerned for a magnificent all round performance from the whole squad with particular reference to the seven that represented both the team and Club so successfully in Spain.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS! COCKERHAM 8  LUNE VALLEY 2 FRIDAY 1ST APRIL 2010:

3RD APRIL 06-00HRS

The team return to their winning ways, following a spate of mixed results, when they hosted the Lune Valley team at the Les Blackburn Memorial ground on Friday 1st April 2010.  This date hearlded the commencement of a busy April schedule, which includes seven games plus a tour to Spain over the Easter period.

Cockerham scored an early goal after 4 minutes with Greg Carter running onto a through ball and placing it beyond the keeper.  There then followed a passage of play which highlighted two points.  Lune Valley, despite their lowly league position are a determined and competative side.  They play with great enthusiasm and remain true sportsmen throughout.  Cockerham, as has been seen of late, suffer when they fail to put together their passing game which in turn creates the required goal opportunities.

For a full thirty minutes Lune Valley frustrated the Cockerham passage of play and equalised with a well taken goal after twelve minutes.  They then followed up with a second after sixteen minutes.  Following a sustained period of pressure their mid fielder hit a high looping shot with the bounce beating the keeper for an unexpected goal.  This had the required impact on the Cockerham side who then went on to score a further two before the half time whistle.  Daniel Lamb on thirty minutes and Greg Carter getting his second on thirty three minutes.   Half time score Cockerham 3 Lune Valley 2.

The scond half saw Cockerham play some clever football with passes now being neatly strung together and the goals begain to flow at regular intervals.  The flanks were used to good effect with quality crosses providing ample opportuiity for the eager forwards.  Josh Whitaker was the first to capitalise with a well taken header after thirty minutes with Mark Bevan joining the act after forty five minutes.  There then followed a passage of play which result in a further three goals being scored.  All followed neat passing moves from mid field, out to the flanks and accurated crosses into the box.  All of which were gratefully pounced on by Mark Bevan for his second and Louis Hadfield who until now had been provider, scoring two in four minutes to edge the Man of the Match award.

This was a good performance lads, well done.  It also created a high on which to depart to Spain for the Copa Marbella International Toournament over the Easter period.  Good luck, have a great time and a safe journey.

PROMOTION HOPES FADE: PRESTON PIRATES 5 COCKERHAM 1 SUNDAY 18TH APRIL 2010

APRIL 21ST 05-00HRS

Cockerham saw their hopes of promotion wiped out with defeat at Worden Park on Sunday, all they can do now is hope that other results go their way.  Pirates hounded from the whistle, chasing and closing down loose balls, eager for revenge from previous encounters.  Cockerham were unlucky to see two good chances hit the crossbar and post after gifting the opposition the first two goals.

Forde was on target for Cockerham after Hilton found him free on the left wing; he made no mistake with a super left foot drive.  It was not Cockerham’s day though with keeper Dugdale picking up an injury and a further two more soft goals they went into the break 4-1 down feeling very dejected.  Luczynski took over in nets and the second half saw Cockerham battle to try and recoup the deficit to no avail, despite numerous chances, pressing forward the inevitable happened and a further goal was conceded.

It is unfortunate that after such a good season the lads “off day” could cost them dearly.

The remaining two fixtures are scheduled for Wednesday 28th April at home 6.30 ko and Sunday 2nd May also at home 11.00 ko.

Team: Dugdale, Atkinson, Bracken, Gaughan, Southward, Forde, Luczynski, Ball, Topping, Moore, Hilton, King & Dixon

NEW PLAYING FACILITES REQUIRED:

January 6th 15:30hrs

Cockerham Junior Football Club is looking for new playing facilites as part of their recently launched development plans.

The Club, now in its twelfth year, has formed a partnership with Garstang FC to allow children from the area to enjoy a seamless progression from junior to senior football and will now cater for a full spectrum of jun ior and youth players.  The growth in the number of teams and players means further playing facilities and another "home" ground are needed to complement the existing village facilities.

Cockerham teams already play on a number of different pitches away from the village, borrowed from outlying parishes and individuals, but the need has now become pressing for a more permanent facility that can be developed for the substainable future of the club.  The club will look at all possibilities including purchase or long term lease of a piece of ground that could be developed into a permanent venue for training and matches.  The land would ideally be in Cockerham or close to the village but the club will consider suitable property within a five-mile radius.

Cockerham chairman Paul Andrews said "The club has enjoyed spectacular growth in recent years and now has over 150 players and coaches.  All our staff are volunteers.  We have realised the need to expand our playing facilities for several years now but the further expansion and partnership with Garstang has brought this to a head.  We now have ten year groups, all needing space for training and matches.  We have fantastic, dedicated coaches, players and parents and I'm sure if we need to raise funds everyone will pull together to make it happen".  He continued: "A suitable piece of land will be flat, well drained and have good access.  We are appealing to landowners within the community to come up with suggestions to help us out of our dilemma and are very keen to listen to any proposals.  We would of course need to consult with the appropriate authorities before a final decision could be taken".

Cockerham, who are sponsored by Citroen Dealership John Wilding, will act as a feeder club to Garstang FC and hope that many of the players will continue to play alongside their friends and team mates from junior football throughout their senior playing career.  The club has always promoted a community ethic and this is seen as the ideal way to further that spirit.  The future development plans included this new dedicated CJFC website, which is directly linked to the Garstang FC website, a standardised red, white and black team strip and a new club logo.

Anyone interested in discussing the availability of land please contact either the Club Chairman, Paul Andrews 01524 571373 or Club Secretary Carole Graham 01523 790687.
