WEEKEND RESULTS: Another difficult afternoon for the First Team, not helped by what looked a serious injury to Matthew Poole. Chris Squirrell got the consolation from the penalty spot. No joy at The Riverside either, Poulton Town taking the spoils of war, so it's down to Garstang Youth Team to brighten the weekend in their Sunday Cuptie at Bolton Arena - get there if you can. *Update: Garstang Youth lost 1-0 against Aspull Juniors, a disappointing result in a game of few chances. Match report on the Youth Team Newspage. The First Team match report is also on Team Newspage. Reserves Match report now added. WEEKEND FOOTBALL:
The size of Garstang's task may be judged from the fact that Coppull, who were also rained off last week, had an excellent 3-1 win at Euxton Villa last time out.
Bails and his blend of youth and experience will fancy this one, despite the fact that Poulton picked up a good 1-1 draw at league leaders Eagley last time out.
Note: players are again reminded to look at their player sponsorships as, after Alec's last plea, only one came forward.
ALL GARSTANG WEEKEND GAMES POSTPONED: Both the weekend games at The Riverside, Charnock and Gregson Lane, are postponed. 11:00am - the Coppull game is off. *Today was new Secretary John Beamont's first matchday in the hot seat! What do you think of it so far, John?
Here is the draw for the First Round of the Houston Cup, to be played on November 12th with a 1:30pm kick off. Bolton County v Euxton Villa WEEKEND FOOTBALL: WLP v Charnock Richard [H] 3:00pm Saturday - Postponed WLRD1 v Coppull United Reserves [A] 3:00pm Saturday - Postponed LEP Reds v Gregson Lane [H] 11:00am Sunday - Postponed 16th September 12:00 Garstang FC continue their quest for that elusive first win on Saturday when league leaders Charnock Richard are the visitors for the 3:00pm kick off. "I feel lik Again, we have had another good week with three players making their debut tomorrow and hopefully a returning player being available for selection. To offset that, we have unfortunately, lost Kelvin Bardsley for a month due to ligament damage in his ankle although, on the plus side Matty Poole is fit after coming off injured last week from what was a very bad tackle. We had a good training session last night and myself, Ben and the squad are looking forward to the visit of one of the big teams in the league. As always, we are all hoping we can get something out of the game in an ever improving squad. Good luck to the Reserves who have a testing game away at Coppull, and the Youth team who are playing Gregson Lane at home on Sunday. As always your support for all games is very welcome and much appreciated." Richard Thomas
You can tell from Manager Bailey's words, earlier in the week, that he is enjoying working with his blend of youth and experience and he will be looking maintain the squads good progress with a win. Kick off is at 3:00pm at Springfield Road, PR7 5EJ.
"The lads who came into the team last week have all got to be pleased with their performances," says Alec Curwen, "And it goes to show that we now have a squad that will be able to compete, no matter who we are throw in against. Alec Curwen WEEKEND RESULTS: Two up, Bryson and Poole, and looking good at half-time, Garstang couldn't hang on to the points: a similar story for the Reserves at Haslingden, with Kippax on target again. On Sunday, Garstang Youth secured another excellent victory, in the Syndicate Trust Youth Cup, with goals from Swindlehurst and Panepinto, the latter in extra time, putting them through. First and Youth Team match reports now available, along with Bails' view of Haslingden. WEEKEND FOOTBALL: With the summer holidays now behind us, football squads across the region are now shaking down to the core of players who will do battle through the winter. We are no exception and, as you can read on the First Team Newspage, Thommo intends to benefit from the 'shake down' in the leagues around us, as well as taking the opportunity set up the squads of Garstang's three teams for the season ahead.
A tough game, yes, but as Thommo says, it is winnable.
Haslingden Reserves sit a point above Garstang but, having played two games more, we should get something from this one. Read more on the Team Newspage.
Read more on the Team Newspage, then head for PR2 0AE on Sunday for the 11:00 am kick off. THURSDAY FOOTBALL: A slow start from Garstang gave Fishwick an early goal but, once they got into gear, there was only going to be one winner. An entertaining game, for lots of reasons, with Tom Graham bagging four of the goals, a Jack Swindlehurst penalty the other.
Not good enough for top spot though, Thornton Cleveleys put 16 past Wyre. Match report now on Team Newspage.
Garstang Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of John Beaumont to the post of Football Secretary. John will pick up his pencil, officially, on September 14th. Ian Blezard, who is overjoyed by the appointment, will continue as 'Acting Secretary' until then. John moved to Garstang a little over a year ago. He has been involved in amateur football for over 40 years, as a player, referee, coach and team manager. He was Secretary of the Junior Section at Thornton Cleveleys FC for many years and assisted with the senior West Lancs teams. Latterly he was Registration Secretary for the Blackpool & District Youth League for five years. “A year out after moving to Garstang has been a good break”, said John, “But a chance meeting with Les Taylor, when I heard that Garstang FC were looking for a Secretary, has given me the opportunity to get involved with my new community. I am looking forward to it”. You can contact John via email: secretary@garstangfc.com.
After Sunday's entertaining cup match, Garstang start their league campaign away at Fishwick Rangers on Thursday evening; kick off is at 6:00pm if you are heading that way! Match report now on Team Newspage. SUNDAY:
Garstang Vets also started their season with an entertaining 3-1 victory over Lancaster Vets in the afternoon sun. Paul Hutton says he got the important goals: more later I expect. *Updated Riverside match poster available for download. **Fixture change: Poulton Town Reserves visit The Riverside on September 24th. CUP WEEKEND:
The kick off is scheduled for 2:00pm and we play to a result, although, as there is no extra time, it's straight to penalties in the event of a draw. "It’s a different competition tomorrow," says Thommo, "and something to take our mind off the league. We are not underestimating our opposition at all and realise the importance of a good cup run, and also a win, to gain momentum for the league campaign. We are without some important players for the game tomorrow due to injuries and holidays, and we have also lost Garreth Lewis who has gone back to Squires Gate after some outstanding performances for us. All players strive to play at the highest possible level, so we wish him good luck and thank him for his efforts with the team. With players missing, and no Reseves game, current fringe players will have the opportunity to step up and making selection even more interesting! Again I thank everyone for their support as we continue to work hard to improve results on the pitch." Fans will recall that we ran neck and neck with Dalton United throughout last season, finally sneaking a few points ahead to ensure our Premiership survival. Since relegation, Dalton are finding life more comfortable and currently occupy third palce, unbeaten in four. Their goal tally, 12 for and 9 against, suggests that we could have an entertaining afternoon.
The squad's final pre-season training session on Thursday was very well attended and Alec Curwen and Dave Porter, the team managers, were delighted to see every registered player there.....and then some! As Alec says, "The management team and players are now ready for Sunday's opener against Southport U17's and, with the addition of some quality players for the new season, we are all looking forward it. We had a great turnout at last night's training and an excellent session put everyone in good spirits and eager for the game.We would like to see as many supporters as possible down at The riverside to cheer the lads on."
Kick off is at 2:00pm - no extra time, straight to the Kings Arms.
Garstang Youth Team hold their final pre-season training sessionn on Thursday at The Riverside at 6:30pm ahead of Sunday's opening fixture, a tasty LFA Under 18 Cup encounter with Southport FC at The Riverside. All registered players must make every effort to get to this training session; please call Alec or Ports now if you are unable to make it on Thursday. WEEKEND RESULTS: Not a good day! Garstang First Team hardly got a kick in a first half dominated by Wrens who went in at half-time a very comfortable 3-0 up. Credit to Thommo's team though, they worked hard to frustrate the Wrens attack in the second half and should have picked up a goal or two before a daft 'stick out your leg and I'll try and fall over it' penalty finished the scoring.
A similar story at The Riverside too; 3-0 down at half-time, Garstang Reserves staged a fight back in the second half with goals from Stuart and Kippax keeping them in the hunt until the end. The day's other results are here. Match reports are on the Team Newspages.
WEEKEND FOOTBALL:
So, what chance have the bottom placed club got against last season's all conquering Wrens? Obviously, they have no chance..............have they?
Norcross have also had a good start to the season, remaining unbeaten and although not scoring many, they are conceding even less. It should be a tight game and, if you haven't seen Bailey's young squad in action, it's worth a look! GFC GOLF DAY: Last week's Garstang FC Golf Day saw nineteen teams competing in the David Quinney Memorial Competition, Mick Hoyle's 'Lancaster City FC' team finishing as winners.
Garstang Veterans begin their season with a home fixture against Lancaster Vets on Sunday 4th September. Kick off is at 2 pm and we hope that they can attract a good audience for what usually turns out to be an entertaining spectacle both in terms of quality of football and comedy of errors. This fixture, which follows the Youth Teams 11 am cup tie, is a repeat of the final game of last season which ended in a creditable 2-2 draw against a good side. The vets are grateful to the club committee for allowing the use of the pitch and hope to play more games this year, both home and away, as more ex players are showing an interest in playing on a more regular basis. Neil Parkinson MIDWEEK RESULT: Garstang should have won this one, but squandered chances and the gift of a free header saw them pointless again. A much improved performance though; so on to Wrens on Saturday. Other results are here. Match report now on Team Newspage.
After Saturday's 'mare, an early opportunity to get back on the park and right some wrongs is welcomed, even if it is against fourth placed Poulton Town. Over the years, this has always been a tasty fixture and, even though the cast list has changed somewhat, there is no reason why tomorrow night at The Riverside, kick off 6:30pm, should be any different. It was Poulton's turn to play Stoneclough last Saturday, and they beat them comfortably at home with two goals in each half. The first came after twelve minutes when former Garstang favourite Whitaker placed the ball in the right hand corner of the net after robbing a Stoneclough defender in the box. A couple of minutes later, he latched on to a long ball and was round the back of the defence when he was brought down by Tebay in the Stoneclough goal. Gaton converted the spot kick, finishing off the contest at the start of the second half by nudging the ball past the advancing Tebay with his knee. A fourth goal was added, back off an upright, to complete a wholehearted display from Poulton who were defensively solid, strong in the tackle, and full of running up front.
We expect that Thommo will have his full squad available again. When the going gets tough........ GCL: NEW KIT SPONSOR Last weeks game against Vickerstown was the first opportunity for the Garstang players to show off their new 'warm-up' kit, sponsored by Garstang Cars Ltd., when Managing Director Bob Horman met the squad before the game.
Remember, use GCL for your coach and taxi hire by calling 01995 607777. Quote 'Account 333' and a percentage of the fare will go straight to Garstang FC. Put the number in your phone now - and tell your friends! WEEKEND RESULT: For what it's worth, Garstang contributed a lot more to this game than a 5-0 reverse suggests. Although the home side had the first clear scoring opportunity of the game, the first half belonged to Thornton who went in 1-0 up following a defensive error.
Garstang started the second half in the ascendancy, but failed to capitalise on their possession and a somewhat harsh penalty gave back the initiative and the game to Thornton. Thornton sub, Matt Ogden bagged four goals; Anthony Warwick the other. Other results are here. Match report on Team Newspage.
With no Reserves game on Saturday, all eyes will be on the Garstang First Team as they take on Thornton Cleveleys at The Riverside, kick off 3:00pm. 'The eyes' will be looking to see how Richard Thomas' team will respond to Tuesday's disappointing result against Vickerstown. here are his 'thoughts on the game:- "It was a bitter blow on Tuesday for everyone involved as we all thought we deserved at least a point, but we came unstuck against a physical side. On the plus side defensively we were much more solid. Tomorrow is a vital game as we need three points to stay within touching distance. Unfortunately we are missing two key players for the game but this gives opportunities for others to stake a claim for a starting eleven shirt. We have made one new signing and he will come straight into the squad tomorrow. He brings ability and determination to an ever building squad, in both quality and confidence. I am looking forward to tomorrow and, as ever, relishing the opportunity to progress Garstang FC. On a different note, well done to the Reserve side on Monday. They put in another great performance and it was a pleasure to be involved in that game. Well done lads." Thornton Cleveleys currently occupy 14th place in the league and, like a couple more of last season's pace setters, they too have had a relatively slow start to their season. Whether their start is down to the perennial 'seven games in August and everyone on holiday' issue remains to be seen but, whatever the reason, they will provide another strong and physical test for Thommo's young squad. Last time out, Thornton entertained another of the surprising early season strugglers, Blackpool Wren Rovers, at Bourne Park, losing to the only goal of the game. In blustery conditions, TCFC started well and created several chances before the game settled into a fierce midfield battle, Fiddler breaking out to nick the goal for Wrens just before halftime. Astute substitutions by the Rovers management then packed the midfield for the second half, thwarting the home attacks and earning the three points.
So, how will we look at five o'clock tomorrow? Come and see for yourself! MIDWEEK RESULTS: A hard lesson this one! Not that much between the two teams in a slightly fractious first half, with Bruce sneaking through for the only goal of the game, but the visitors, strong and hard-working in midfield, frustrated the Garstang attack throughout the game.
Match reports are now on the Team Newspages: photos on facebook. *Updated match poster now available on downloads page. Thornton Cleveleys Reserves 2 Garstang Reserves 2 A very good advert for Reserves Division One, this game ebbed and flowed for the whole 90 minutes. Garstang, again shuffling the pack to accomodate injuries and abscences, were slow to start but moved into the lead with Swanwick again on the mark. Thornton, who were playing some good football, then got the initiative and used it to go in 2-1 up at half time. The second half was more end to end stuff with a tireless Rick Chamberlain getting the equaliser, converting one of the numerous chances created at either end. Good point. Good game. Report and photos available. *Richard Thomas took charge of the team due to the absence of Paul Bailey, whose father died suddenly yesterday. Our condolences to Paul and his family. MIDWEEK GAMES:
I'm told that Bails couldn't stop grinning after the game! His team soaked up a very good Tempest offensive on Saturday before engaging the forward gears and moving on to a good win. Two wins and seven goals is a good start, but next up is a difficult trip to Thornton Cleveleys for a 6:30pm Monday kick off. If you can get there, and you should, the Bourne Road ground is at FY5 4QA. Thornton drew 1-1 at Fulwood at the weekend, after winning 4-2 at Poulton in their opening game but, rest assured, Bails and his team will be looking to repeat last season's double over the team downstream. You can read his Tempest assessment on the Reseve Team Newspage.
You will, of course, have worked out that Vickerstown played at Stoneclough last Saturday, opening their tally as early as the fifth minute when a clever diagonal ball was latched on to by Pearson, who carried the ball 30 yards before rounding Tebay and scoring the opener. Following ten minutes of Stoneclough pressure, Vickerstown's Pearson was upended in the box and Pattinson converted the penalty. Vickerstown's third goal killed the game when Pattinson lobbed the Stoneclough keeper from long range. From this point onwards Stoneclough were always chasing the game, Brennan and Gay hitting goals in the second half on the break to give the visitors the 5-0 win. Eccles, in the Vickerstown goal, pulled off two fine saves in the dying moments of the game to emphasise that this was clearly a team effort. This result at Stoneclough is certainly a 'turn up' following their 0-5 defeat by Poulton up on 'the riviera' on the opening day. So, which team turns up on Tuesday? Read Thommo's thoughts ahead of the game on the Team Newspage. WEEKEND RESULTS: Another good day for the Reserves, slow to start, but more and more dominant as the game progressed. Tom Kelsall, Rob Butler and Adam Swanwick with the goals to take the team into second place in the league. The First Team should have had a better day, conceding in the last minute took the shine off a much improved display: David Jack, new signing Matthew Poole, and Gareth Lewis with the goals. Make sure that you check out the day's other results here.
Match report now on Team Newspage. GFC ANNUAL GOLF DAY: There are still several tee-off times available for Garstang Football Club’s 17th Annual Golf Day, played in memory of David Quinney. The event is taking place at Garstang Golf Club on Friday August 19th, with tee-off times available between 11.30am and 3.30pm. The competition is a 4 ball AM/AM Stapleford and the entry fee is £120 per team, including food, with a prize presentation at 8.30pm. To book, ring Les Taylor on 07967 337416.
After news of Wednesday's washout at Burnley reached the team bus parked at The Riverside, Richard Thomas could be seen pacing the carpark in the rain. He really wanted that game on. He wanted to get straight back on the park to work on erasing the Stoneclough memories! Well, he gets another chance on Saturday but this time at Tempest United who, coincidentally, were beaten 2-1 at Stoneclough in midweek in a closely fought game. Stoneclough took the lead when Phil Hill pinged a long pass to Liam Ralph to volley home: sound familiar? A red card for each side, Ralph and the Tempest No.11, phased Tempest less and they equalised when their No.9 latched on to a defensive error. A half time reshuffle got Stoneclough back in the lead through substitute Walker and, although Tempest battled to the end, Stoneclough defended well although Tempest were denied their best chance of an equaliser when Keeper Tebay brought down the Tempest No.9 in a 'one on one'. Expecting a penalty and a red card, Tempest got a free kick and a yellow!
Kick off is at 3:00pm at Tempest Road, Chew Moor Village, BL6 4HP. Paul Bailey can't wait to get back on the pitch either, after putting four past Fulwood in midweek! "A good start to the season", he says ahead of Tempest Reserves' visit to The Riverside for the 3:00pm kick off. Read more of Bails on the Team Newspage. MIDWEEK RESULTS: A slow start for Bailey's team with Fulwood taking an early lead when Brad Fox fired in from the right. Jack soon equalised for Garstang, however, latching on to a back pass, and then setting up Swindlehurst for the second. Rob Butler got in to head the third before half time. Fulwood had most of the play after the break, MoM Bardsley prominent defending the lead, before Southward got away near the end to keep the 24 hardy souls who braved the weather, happy.
Squad: Marc Armstrong, Phil Roskell, Dan Sutcliff, Kelvin Bardsley, Ian Wormleighton, Dave Porter, David Jack, Adam Swanwick, Andrea Matichecchia, Rob Butler, Jack Swindlehurst, Paul Southward, Oscar Panepinto, Carlo Matichecchia and Joe Miller. Match report on Team Newspage. AS YOU WERE: Two teams have dropped out of the LEPSFL Youth Division at the last minute with the result that Garstang Youth Team have been re-assigned back into the 'Reds'. There are ten teams in the Division, the others being Burscough Dynamo, Charnock Richard, Euxton Villa, Fishwick Rangers, Gregson Lane, New Longton Rovers, Tarleton Corinthians, Thornton Cleveleys and Wyre. September fixtures are now available. SOCCER SCHOOL SUCCESS:
As you can see, last week's soccer school was a big success, so much so that Morecambe FC's Community Department are putting on another at The Riverside in August, commencing on Monday the 22nd. To book a place, or get more details, call 01524 412125. MIDWEEK FIXTURES: 'A disappointing end to a great start' is how Thommo saw it last Saturday, but he and Ben also found lots of positives to take on to Burnley for this difficult midweek fixture. You can read more from the Manager on the First Team Newspage.
Garstang and Burnley last met in 2008/09, when they were relegated, memorably winning their last game in the division 2-0 at The Riverside! Their only outing this time saw them pick up a good 1-0 victory at Eagley last Saturday with a 50th minute winner, a defensive error seeing the ball squared for Oldroyd to hit home from close range. A close contested game, Burnley had the look of a team used to winning, with a solid defence marshalled by Burnley Captain, Potts, who won most of the aerial battles.
Kick off at the Barden Sports Ground, postcode BB10 1JQ, is 6:45pm.
Manager Bailey was very pleased with his squad's performances in their last two pre-season games but, even so, Fulwood Reserves, placed fifth last season, represent a tough challenge having come out on top in last season's fixture by the odd goal in three. This is how he sees it: "Really looking forward to the start of this season. Pre-season has gone well with one defeat, one draw and two wins. The squad is coming together well with the return of Dave Jack, Kelvin Bardsley and Andrea Matichecchia, and I have several Youth Team players already pushing for a place with us, including Jack Swindlehurst, Sam Livesey and Oscar Panepinto. Training has been good: very good in fact as it does help having a First Team Manger that can and does coach. First up is Fulwood and, although they lost their opening game 2-0 at Tempest, it will be a tough test, but one I think we can win. Hopefully we will have good crowd down watching." Cheers, Bails Monday's Reserve Division results are here along with Tuesday's Prem games. CLUB SECRETARY: As you are, no doubt, aware Garstang FC are looking to recruit a new Match Secretary following the resignation of Paul Hutton. If you have 'secretarial business' with the Club, you can email here and your enquiry will be handled promptly. WEEKEND RESULTS: Two-nil up, thanks to two debut goals from Gareth Lewis, and Garstang were wondering what all the fuss was about with this West Lancs League! Two minutes, two mistakes and two goals later, they knew. Garstang picked it up again at the start of the second half until an unstoppable rocket gave Stoneclough the edge; the home team picking up a fourth as the visitors tired, chasing the game. Garstang did play some excellent football at times though, and it was a cracking game of football. Bring on lesson two!
Garstang: Dan Curwen, Adam Roskell, Jamie Preston, James McDuff, Joe Miller, Ryan Twiname (C), Gareth Lewis, Lee Riley, Graham Haydock, Michael West and Jamie Bryson. Substitutes: Matthew Chapman, Phil Roskell and Jack Sawyer. Cadley became Galgate at the last minute for the Reserves final pre-season fixture. Ben Stuart got the Garstang goal in an excellent first hour before the subs got a go against a 'very physical' Galgate with the Brothers Wilson prominent. Bails was happy, despite being red-carded! Garstang Reserves Squad: Adam Swanwick, Paul Southward, Rob Butler, Ian Wormleighton, Kelvin Bardsley, Dave Porter, Andy Taylor Jnr., Dan Sutcliff, Jack Swindlehurst, Ben Stuart, James Summerside, Josh Heap and Andrew Simpson. The Stoneclough match report is on the team newspage. All Saturdays WLL results are here. WEEKEND FIXTURES:
Thommo makes his team selection from a young squad with many fresh faces although, in fairness, fifteen of the senior players were with us last term. Undeniably, his squad will also have to come to terms with the West Lancs, with Saturday being 'lesson one'! Season 2010/11, and Stoneclough were not alone in getting the better of us, picking up narrow victories, 2-1 at their place and 1-0 at ours. Our 'Chief Scout' caught their pre-season friendly at home against Hindsford FC which the Manchester Premier League side edged 1-0 with a late goal, but deserved more in what was an open attacking game. On the day, Stoneclough's most prominent players were Keeper Tebay and, at the centre of defence, Newton, in a Hindsford dominated first half, but the home team raised the tempo and staged a typically combative second half performance to keep a good crowd happy.
Here's Thommo's take ahead of the game: "It's the first game of the season and it's what we have have all been working and waiting for. Stoneclough away! I'm sure it will be a tough test for the new look squad but it is one that we are all looking forward to. With three new faces with us tomorrow, it is exciting times for the new look squad. The new players will bring experience which, you will agree, is much needed, and quality. I think that we are now achieving a good balance of experience and youth. We are all aware of the task ahead of us tomorrow, and Ben and I are going to the game with a positive attitude and believe that we can come away with something. August is a very tough month with seven fixtures against good opposition but we have sat down, looked at the games, and set the squad a points target which is, in our opinion, realistic. With new faces, a new system and new ideas for the new season, these are interesting times for Garstang FC. Your support on Saturday would be very welcome and it has been much appreciated by the players through pre-season." Richard Thomas It's Brook Street, Kearsley M26 1HE. Who's going? Reserves Manager Bailey, brassed off at having no fixture on the opening day again, has arranged a friendly against Cadley FC at The Riverside if you really can't do a Saturday without one of Porter's pies.
Manager Thomas gets his last look at his charges this evening, kick off scheduled for 7:30pm, ahead of the season's opening fixture at Stoneclough on Saturday. Both Thommo and, more importantly, his young squad will be anxious to put last Saturday's disappointing first half performance behind them and, one suspects, they will be a lot more comfortable playing the role of the underdog against Squires Gate. Hope to see you there. *Update: Garstang 0 Squires Gate 3 **Update 2: Without the services of Squirrell, Bamba, Chapman, C Matichecchia, Sawyer and keeper Howell, Garstang gave a decent account of themselves, particularly after being three goals down at the interval. Against opposition two leagues up the football pyramid, it was a struggle for the home team in the earlier stages of the game and they found themselves a goal down after only eight minutes. The second and third goals were really defensive mistakes that gave the visitors a comprehensive half-time lead. Garstang were much better in the second period creating a number of their own chances, the best coming from a good strike from young David Jack whose shot was tipped over the bar by former Garstang Keeper 'Tiny' Beesley. Garstang Squad: Dan Curwen, Phil Roskell, Jamie Preston, Kelvin Bardsley, Joe Miller, Adam Roskell, Jake Salisbury, Ryan Twiname, Ben Stuart, Michael West, Jamie Bryson, Richard Chamberlain, David Jack, Andy Taylor Jnr. and Ben Adjei. MIXED FORTUNES: Hesketh Bank 3 Garstang 0 Bails is the happier man tonight as his team played well in a convincing win at Lytham - Mark Salthouse 2 and Adam Swanwick with the goals. Both squads were stretched thin due to absentees and injuries so, if nothing else, a ninety minute workout in the sun will have put some match fitness in the tank.
Squads:
ONE WEEK TO GO: With the start of the season only one week away, the senior team managers get their first chance to assess the depth of the playing squad tomorrow when both the First and Reserve Teams have friendly fixtures. The First Team travel to Hesketh Bank, PR4 6SR, with the Reserves visiting Lytham Town, FY8 4LE. Both games kick off at 3:00pm. GARSTANG 1 WIGAN ROBIN PARK 1: A good performance from the squad tonight against a quick and determined opposition. Settling well into the game following Seydou Bamba's opener, an injury* to Keeper Howell gave Robin Park the opportunity to get back in the game.
Match Summary: This was a well contested and entertaining game to watch, only marred by what, at the time, looked like a serious injury* to Keeper, Simon Howell who may now struggle to make the start of the season. Wigan Robin Park, who play in the North West Counties League, had the Garstang defence at full stretch in the early stages of the game but were unable to break down some solid defending. Garstang started to create chances of their own before Bamba volleyed the hosts into the lead just before the break. Play continued in a competitive manner, swinging from end to end, before Howell's injury early in the second half disrupted things for Garstang. Matichecchia picked up the gloves but could do nothing to prevent Wigan from equalizing when the Garstang defence was breached, still with 20 minutes to go. Jamie Bryson, son of former North Ender Ian, looked like he had snatched the winner, below, when he rifled home a great through ball by the industrious West, but unfortunately the goal was ruled out for offside.
This must have been a very encouraging performance for Manager, Richard Thomas, and grounds for optimism from the healthy crowd who witnessed the game. GARSTANG SQUAD: Simon Howell, Phil Roskell, Jamie Preston, Carlo Matichecchia, Joe Miller, Chris Squirrell, Ryan Twiname, Matt Chapman, Seydou Bamba, Michael West, Jamie Bryson, Rick Chamberlain, Chris Chetwood, Jack Sawyer and Andy Taylor Jnr. *Simon's injury was not as bad as it looked - swollen/bruised. **Reserve Team Manager Bailey has today denied press reports, here, of Arsenal scouts watching his players. AGM REMINDER: The Annual General Meeting of Garstang Football Club will take place at Garstang Golf Club on Monday August 1st commencing at 7:30pm. You are invited. The Annual Report is here.
A big night on Wednesday when Garstang FC play their first game at The Riverside with Richard Thomas at the helm. Here are his thoughts ahead of the game:
The development of the football has also been excellent with the squads getting together and competing well. Although the Norcross game was not anything to write home about, all watching saw some glimpses of the quality the squad has. Last Wednesday night we travelled to play Highgrove, who are the North Lancs Champions and had beaten Vickerstown the Saturday before. The football that was witnessed on the night was second to none and the result was a 3-2 win, something which pleased both myself and my new Assistant Manager Ben Adjei. On Saturday we then took a squad back to the Globe Arena to play Morecambe Youth Side and narrowly lost out 3-2. All the games I have witnessed so far have been very pleasing and, although there is still a lot of work to do, with a few more signings on the horizon, I am confident that the players and staff will be in place to bring stability and success back to Garstang FC. I am very much looking forward to our first outing at The Riverside on Wednesday when we host Wigan Robin Park in what will be another tough test for the squad. With young, Reserve and new signings all being involved in the game as we settle our squads, I am hoping for the 'traditional' good support from the fans and, hopefully, everyone will see that the club is now going in the right direction." Richard Thomas Kick off is at 7:30pm and you need to be there! MORECAMBE YOUTH TEAM PsF: It's back to the Globe Arena tomorrow when Bails and Thommo take a squad to play Morecambe Youth. Kick off is at 2:00pm.
Southport FC will now be visiting The Riverside on September 4th in the First Round of the Lancashire FA U18 Youth Cup. The full draw is here. *Update: 3-2 win v Highgrove in a 3x30 training game. Miller, Twiname and Squirrel got 'em. GROUND DEVELOPMENT: Finally, after many weeks of design development and consultation, local architects Graham Salisbury Associates will shortly submit a planning application to Wyre BC on behalf of Garstang Sports and Social Club relating to improvements to The Riverside ground. For us, Garstang FC, the key elements relate to perimeter fencing of the cricket, football and tennis sections, and include the provision of floodlighting. A full press release will appear in the Garstang Courier on Wednesday. **Update: Courier story is here.
Yesterday's PsF against Norcross & Warbreck at Thornton Sports Centre certainly gave the Gaffer and his new sidekick, Ben Adjei, plenty to think about. The result, 2-0 to Norcross, was probably a fair reflection even though a wind assisted free kick (57 minutes) and a late defensive mistake (82 minutes) accounted for the goals. It is said that pre-season results are not important and, whilst this fact is largely true, the new coaching duo will now be fully aware of the task that lies before them as they watched the 'young guns' finding it hard to stamp their authority on the game against a rugged Norcross side. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, on an open field, conditions could not be described as conducive to good football. The Garstang keeper Rogerson, in as cover for holiday absentees, was the busier of the two keepers in the first period, though the home defence was breached on a couple of occasions with Garstang’s best effort coming from Bamba, his shot being tipped over the bar.
Garstang: David Rogerson, Carlo Matichecchia, Jamie Preston, Chris Squirrell, Joe Miller, Michael West, Seydou Bamba, Adam Roskell, Ben Stuart, Ryan Twiname, Jamie Bryson, Rick Chamberlain, Matthew Chapman, Jack Sayer and Andy Taylor Jnr. BROUGHTON 2 GARSTANG 3: Last night's outing at Broughton proved to be a very worthwhile excercise, despite the soaring temperatures, and grass, as Richard Thomas got a chance to step back and have a good look at players pressing for promotion up the Garstang ranks. Everyone in the 15 man squad got at least 60 minutes, rolling substitutes, in a good hard working game which saw Broughton take the lead with a good finish from a set piece. Jack Swindlehurst scored two before half time with Broughton equalising after 55 minutes. Carlo's late winner came from a corner. And the Gaffer's view? "Impressed. Four players looked worthy of the First Team Squad and I'll have three of them at Norcross tomorrow. Of the younger players, Jack Swindlehurst and Tom Graham put in good solid performances and they will be great additions to Ports Youth Team." Squad at Broughton: Ben Fletcher (GK), Carlo and Dre Maticheccia, Miller, Jake Watson, Southward, Bardsley, Taylor Jnr, Twyname, Salthouse, Wormleighton, Panepinto, Taylor Snr, Tom Graham and Jack Swindlehurst. PRE-SEASON SCHEDULE: Three weeks to the West Lancs kick off and the pre-season training emphasis is now gradually shifting to football friendlies. Bails takes a squad down the A6 to Broughton Amateurs tonight (7:00pm ko), Thommo heads for Thornton to play Norcross & Warbreck on Saturday (1:00pm ko), Ports gets his turn with the Youth Team on Monday when they play Myerscough at Bilsborrow (7:00pm ko) and, next Wednesday, Highgrove are the opposition on Morecambe's 3G pitch. Ground locations can be found via the fixtures pages.
The draw for the first round of the Amateur Shield has given us a home tie against Dalton United on September 3rd. The full draw is here. JUNE LOTTERY WINNER: Les Taylor finally managed to catch up with our June Jackpot winner yesterday! Not surprising that the winner was difficult to pin down though as Robert Murgatroyd is the CEO of Fly Blackpool Ltd.
GARSTANG CARS TO SPONSOR CLUB:
The Nateby based Taxi and Bus company have agreed to sponsor the Club’s 'Warm Up' kit for each of Garstang Football Club’s three teams, together with all the gear required to kit out the Team Management. “We have adopted a policy of treating all players the same" said Les Taylor, "but this can be very expensive when kitting out three teams. We are, therefore, very grateful to Bob Horman, Managing Director of Garstang Cars Ltd., for this level of support”. Bob from GCL said, "We are delighted to be associated with Garstang Football Club where, apart from the football aspect of this deal, we were attracted by Garstang FC's aims for the community. To that end, we are also pleased to announce that the community scheme, adopted by many local schools and organisations, is now available to supporters of Garstang FC." "If anyone books a taxi with GCL, they can help Garstang FC by quoting 'Account 333' when booking, and Garstang Cars will give 5% of the fare to Garstang FC." Remember: call 01995 607777 to book your taxi and quote '333' to help your club. Put it in your phone now! ATTENTION YOUTH PLAYERS:
If you are a player still 'thinking about it', or you know someone who is, contact Dave Porter on 07827 989124. If you prefer, just call in on one of the training sessions listed in the event calendar here. Existing squad members are reminded that, due to holiday committments, Alec needs registration documents, along with a copy of your birth certificate and two passport photographs on, or before, next Tuesday's training session. If you miss this window, then you may not be eligible for the opening games of the season. NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The Annual General Meeting of Garstang Football Club will be held on Monday August 1st at 7:30pm in Garstang Golf & Country Club. AGENDA • Opening remarks (Chairman) All committee members are asked to attend or send their apologies. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting. TRAINING GAME: Thirty plus players attended last night's training game at The Beeches, all of them getting a chance to 'show their stuff' in the 'Thommo v Bails' contest. Of course, it is still 'early days', but it was refreshing to see so many players out to impress the Team Managers and claim a shirt!
After the session, Les Taylor dragged everyone along to Pickering's Hotel for a brief presentation of the '2011/12 Player Sponsorship' scheme - details here.
Tuesday's 'back to work' training session got our new season up and running nicely and the quality of work shown there already augurs well. There is, however, still a mountain of work for Richard and his backroom to accomplish before the first public unveiling of his charges against Wigan Robin Park on July 27th at The Riverside. In the next couple of weeks, every player will be profiled, in terms of fitness, as Richard assesses their strengths and builds his three squads. His intention is to identify and separate the three squads in sufficient time to get three clear weeks working with the First Team squad ahead of the Stoneclough opener. Watch this space! GOT A SMARTPHONE? If you own an iPhone, Blackberry or Android smartphone, sync it with the Garstang Football Club Google Calendar and you will receive updates to fixtures and events.....automatically. e&oe!

Thornton Cleveleys, Poulton Town and Wrens all feature in a packed opening month for the First Team; Bailey's Reserves keeping their powder dry until August 10th and the visit of Fulwood Reserves. Full details are on the Fixture Pages. TRAINING DAY:
WE GOT THE BLUES:
PRE-SEASON TRAINING: Pre-season got underway last Friday when the Youth Team 'prospects' held a session at The Beeches. Alec Curwen described the turnout as 'reasonable', but he expects more at the first full squad session on Tuesday evening. First Team Gaffer Richard Thomas took some of the Friday session, and he was very pleased with what he saw.
It's more of the same for the youth team squad tomorrow and then they have a pre-season friendly against the Myerscough 'new students' on Thursday - meet at the college at 6:00pm. This fixture has been cancelled.
First of all may I say that anyone is welcome to attend tomorrows pre-season. It's a 6.30pm meet at The Riverside, then we will make our way to The Beeches where we will train for 90 minutes. After the session, a full pre-season schedule will be handed out to all players. Sessions will be combined to include the First, Reserve and Youth Team players, with the actual squads being formulated from there. The session content will be mainly 'ball work fitness' as pre season without footballs is ‘old school’ and a long hard slog! It’s time for you to impress! Our friendly list, as you will have seen on the website, has some interesting fixtures from other leagues and will prove to be a good test for the squad. The games build up to the main fixture on August 2nd when we host Squires Gate in the final game before our season begins. With fresh ideas, new players and a new club ethos, I look forward to this season with great anticipation and excitement. Richard Thomas MORE PsF's: Visits to Norcross & Warbreck, Broughton Amateurs and Lytham Town have been added to the pre-season fixture list. All PsF's are listed on ther First Team Fixtures page.
As usual, we spend the summer reviewing last season and preparing for next. In terms of the website, we did alright, but it can only ever be as good as the news stories that we publish and, in the coming season, our news gatherers are looking a bit thin on the ground! Two of our match reporters, who did sterling work following the Reserve and Youth teams difficult seasons, have other committments this time and so we are looking for replacements who can help us to maintain the high profile of those two teams in support of Richard Thomas' 'One Squad' philosophy. Contact Ian, web@garstangfc.com, for a initial chat if you fancy it.
Garstang Youth Team; this is the start of it. After a couple of early 'get togethers', Friday's Youth Team training session offers the GFC Team Managers their first real chance to assess the up and coming young stars who will be pulling on the lion shirt in the new season. It also gives the players a look at our new First Team Manager as Richard Thomas will be taking part of the training session. Meet at the Riverside for 6:30pm prompt, and don't forget your trainers, boots and kit. If more information is needed, you can ring Ports [07827 989124] or Alec [07973 568560]. Ports has a briefing document to hand out on the night, but you can get a sneak preview here. PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES: The PsF schedule is now firming up with Highgrove, Wigan Robin Park, Hesketh Bank and Squires Gate already confirmed; and two or three more to add. Current details are here. MEET THE GAFFER: Want to know a little more about new manager Richard Thomas?
In order to help recover some of the day to day costs associated with playing football in the West Lancs and LEP Leagues, all Garstang players are required to acquire a 'Player Sponsor' for the 2011/12 season. If you are a player, or you would like to play your part in our endeavours by becoming a player sponsor, you can find full details here.

The forum is being moved to the back burner whilst we concentrate on our blossoming facebook and twitter [@garstangfc] pages for a while.
New Manager Richard Thomas - 'Thommo' - completed the formalities on Thursday evening when he was introduced to the members of the full management committee, coaching staff and, of course, the shirt! Richard is still finalising details with his intended '#2', but he was able to announce the appointment of Chris, who many will know as a former Garstang FC goalkeeper and manager, is a superb acquisition. He has a wealth of experience and will buy straight into the new manager's technical coaching style. We'll add a couple of cv's to the website soon. Do you need to contact the gaffer? Try richard.thomas@garstangfc.com. RICHARD THOMAS: Garstang FC are pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Thomas as First Team Manager. Richard, aged 28, holds a UEFA B licence and has been a coach at the Myerscough Football Development Centre for the past six years.
