Match Preview | Andy Harkins

Garstang v Vickerstown: Stephen Corran's Vickerstown team make the midweek journey down the M6 tonight to The Riverside looking to make it three wins from three against Garstang this season, having already won 1-0 in the league fixture although a strange refereeing decision helped and got the secretary in trouble, followed by a victory in the Richardson Cup at a rain-soaked Riverside, this time on penalties after the game finished 3-3 after extra time

Vickerstown have done well in this, their first season in the West Lancs Premiership, and look set to finish comfortably in mid-table, an excellent achievement all round. From what I remember of Vickerstown, they are a well organised, hard working side that will provide a stern test tonight for Somerside's Heroes. A top five finish looks guaranteed for the First Team, however third and fourth places are still very much up for grabs and we can put some real pressure on Freckleton tonight by picking up the points on offer ahead of their final game on Saturday, away at Haslingden.

Cox is back available tonight, having made a succesful re-appearance on Saturday, Ireland managed thirty minutes on Saturday replacing the competent Bardsley, and Cummins played the second half in a desperate attempt to shed the couple of pounds he had obviously picked up on his recent trip to Philladelphia. He informs me that he had been over there supporting his girlfriend. However, I think he'd been supporting Burger King! Cropper has got over his ankle injury and declared himself available, although he may have to wait his turn from the substitutes bench.

Kick off 6:30 pm.

Malcolm Hoyles - should be discharged from hospital imminently and will spend some R&R time with his brother. Good!

Match Report | Les Taylor

Referee Mr Tattersall must have been up half the night writing his match report after he booked eight players and sent off one in a game that could not be described as dirty. Yes, it was competitive, but if he had been consistant earlier in the game, then frustration would not have crept into both sets of players. Cox started the game and Hunt was relegated to the bench, where he was joined by Cropper, back from injury.

Vickerstown were in front after only three minutes, a Bruce pass splitting the home defence and giving striker Keenan the opportunity to make it 1-0. Keenen continued to be a threat as the half progressed, but Garstang still created chances with Cummins and Fawcett twice going close, one such effort being hacked off the line with the keeper beaten. A fine strike from long range by Kilifin skimmed the bar as the home team pressed for an equaliser before the break.

Cropper replaced Bardsley as the second half got under way, when Vickerstown substituted the injured Wright with Adams. Geoff Wilson brought a good save out of keeper Eccles, who pushed his shot against the post (below) as the home team mounted attack after attack.

Ireland replaced Cox and Hunt replaced Geoff Wilson, who had taken his customary booking and was becoming more than frustrated. Cummins shot wide when he latched on to a Horton clearance before Garstang were awarded a hotly disputed penalty in the 71st minute when the visitors keeper was seen kicking out at Cummins following an aerial challenge. Things calmed down and Cummins maintained his compossure to make it 1-1.

As Garstang went for the winner Eccles had to brilliantly punch a Richard Wilson header over the bar and then Ireland fired a free kick inches over. In between, Vickerstown had Bruce sent off for a second yellow. The home team deservidly wrapped it up all in the last eight minutes when first, Horton converted a Cropper corner, then Man of the Match Fawcett made it three with only two minutes to go. This win makes it four on the bounce, with a good chance to take third place in the league.
