Few people, who witnessed the corresponding fixture last season, will ever forget that date. Monday 5th May 2008 will be etched on the memories of many people for a lifetime as it was, of course, the day that The West Lancashire Premier Division trophy arrived at it's spiritual home! Few will ever forget the goals of Cox and Coar, Big Geoff lifting the trophy in front of near on 300 people and, of course, the daft antics of Hargreaves, Somerside, Baker, Harkins and the entire First Team squad in the river!
Tommorrow's fixture is almost as important a game, with Somerside's Heroes having put themselves in a position to take third place in the league this season. Six points from the remaining two fixtures will be the task set, and with their recent current form, together with a couple of key players now back from injury, there really is no excuse now not to go and take that third place.
Turton arrive having suffered a severly weather interupted season. However, we all know that any Turton side turned out will be big, strong, physical, organised and ready to do battle. Big Gaz will, no doubt, still be keeping goal, and he is always hard to beat behind four big centre halves across the back. Turton do like to keep things tight at the back and they are always dangerous on the break.
Somerside's Heroes will be boosted by the returning Cropper, who arguably had his finest 45 minutes for Garstang FC when he replaced Bardsley on Tuesday night. Ireland also looked up for the battle when he was introduced following his recent groin injury. Big Geoff Wilson will also have to be on his best behaviour tomorrow as an organised Turton side will take some breaking down. The whole team will need to show lots of patience and calmness tommorrow as they look to take the points and continue their recent excellent run of good form.

Current third place holder, Freckleton, play their last fixture today, away at Haslingden St Mary's. Fifth placed Dalton United entertain Burnley United. |
This was a game that Garstang really didn't deserve to win. A combination of last ditch defending, and heroics from keeper Jim Brindle, prevented Turton overhauling their host's half time 2-0 lead.
Manager Somerside had to start the game with a completely different back four with Kilifin and Baker unavailable, and McEvoy suffering a serious injury at midweek training. Skipper Geoff Wilson was partenered at centre back with Ireland, and Cropper and Butler filled the full back positions.
It was always going to be a difficult afternoon against a side known for the quality of their football and, for 20 minutes both sides worked hard to dominate on a rock hard end of season surface. Then came the first goal, when a Turton defender failed to deal with the bouce of the ball in his penalty box leaving Hunt to nip in and score. Garstang went two up after 30 minutes when Cropper found Cummins, on the left wing, with a good pass. The striker-cum-midfielder took two steps inside and with his right foot curled a wonderful strike into the far top corner.
The visitors were becoming a little tetchy as they weren't two goals worse than their hosts. Hanlon was booked for his frustrations, but it could have been worse for Turton had not Andrews tipped a subtle free kick from Ireland over the bar. Turton did have a clear opportunity to reduce the arrears just before the break, but Gallagher put his shot wide.
Chances were a-plenty at the start of the second half. Horton spurned two half chances, then Burrows wasted one for Turton, before Andrews went full length to save a Cummins free kick. Garstang suffered another blow when Fawcett limped off to be replaced by Miller. Turton replaced Barras with Leece.
Turton deservidly pulled one back after 60 minutes when Gallagher did well when he converted an incoming cross at the near post. For the next 30 minutes, the Garstang defence came under wave after wave of Turton attacks. Ward, Burrows, Gallagher and a free kick from Hanlon all went close and were either thwarted by the bar, goal line clearances, or Garstang's hero for the afternoon, Brindle, who had to make more than one brilliant save. There were yellow cards shown to Burrows and Ward for Turton, and to Hunt for Garstang.
Whilst one might have had some sympathy for the efforts of the opposition, you can only admire the resiliance of the Garstang team that means that a victory against Burnley United, at the Riverside in the last match of the season, next Saturday will guarantee a very creditable third place finish.
