BAILS ON STONECLOUGH

Given a free week, I just thought I would say a few words about last Saturday's game v Stoneclough......

It wasn't the easiest of days with a few players still out with injuries, bloody cold and wet, the pitch not at it's best and playing the bottom of the league, it was all starting looking a bit iffy.

On the plus side, Andy Ireland made a welcome return after a long absence with a bad knee iujury. He played 45 minutes and he played them very well, although I bet he was a little stiff on Sunday! Joe Miller also made his return.

We started well, and Oscar Panepinto, my 'MoM' finished well when put through by Ireland and, to be fair, we should have put the game to bed in the first half. With the pitch getting worse by the minute, the second half was never going to be easy on the eye but, fair due to the lads, they worked there socks off.

Jack Swindlehurst got us our second goal when he put in a great cross which the Stoneclough defender put in his own net. As the pitch got worse any football became hard work, but Phil Jammin and Swindlehurst showed some real class. Adam Swanwick was a rock in midfield, and Ben Stuart and Panepinto both never stopped running up front.

With next weekend off we can all get down to The Riverside and support the First Team.

MATCH REPORT:
Garstang 3 Haslingden St Mary's 2
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goals: Swindlehurst 2, Taylor Jnr

A decent crowd of 58 at The Riverside were well entertained in this five goal thriller with Bailey's men at last getting back to winning ways. Whilst there was some sunshine, the cold wind did not deter from a throughly enjoyable afternoon.

Two Coat Weather at the Riverside!

In the opening exchanges, the home side were on top with Kippax looking lively up front. Firstly he danced past a couple of challenges and clipped a ball into the box, but this was cleared, then he went on a run through the defence only to have his clever chip well saved by the visiting keeper. After six minutes though, Garstang suffered a blow when Kippax was forced off with a groin injury; this affecting the home side for a short time.

The majority of the play in the first half was restricted to a midfield battle with Salthouse and Taylor (Jnr) more than matching their opponents in the centre, whilst Stevens and Swindlehurst were lively out wide. On that note, it was a pleasing to see Stevens back at The Riverside after starting the season elsewhere. Whilst the centre half pairing of Baldwin and Roskell may have lacked height, this did not cause a problem and they were comfortably dealing with the Haslingden attacks.

It was the away team that took the lead, and it was a poor goal to concede as a free kick from wide was punted into the box, no one took responsibility and a miscued headed clearance dropped on to the head of a visiting forward who nodded the ball in over the advancing Curwen. This, however, spurred the home side into action and they were level within a few minutes. As Garstang pressed foward the ball broke to 'Collinson Man of the Match' Swindlehurst who's low and powerful shot found the back of the net.

The second half saw Garstang step up a gear with Stuart and Chamberlain causing Haslingden problems. Also the crowd were treated to three excellant strikes, all of which would have deserved to win any game.

The first stunner game when Swindlehurst advanced towards goal, the away defenders backed off and, from 25 yards, the youngster did not need any further invitation, sending a screamer into the bottom corner.  The lead was further extended when Andy Taylor (Jnr) decided to get in on the act. The ball broke to him on the edge of the box where he showed great control and then fired a cracker through the crowd into the bottom corner.

Garstang Dominant in the Second Half.

Garstang were in total control of the game at this point and solid defending meant that they did not look like conceding again. Stuart managed to talk himself into a yellow card before kicking the ball away and escaping with just a talking to, which prompted Manager Bailey to do the sensible thing and immediately take him off.

With time running out Haslingden got themselves a life line when they pulled a goal back with a stunning curling free kick into the top corner but, despite a tense final few minutes, the Reserves saw the game out and claimed a deserved three points.

GARSTANG: Curwen, C.Matichecchia, Roskell (c), Baldwin, Taylor (snr), Salthouse, Taylor (jnr), Stevens, Swindlehurst, Kippax and Stuart.
SUBSTITUTES: Panepinto, Southward and Chamberlain (Kippax).

RESULT: Euxton Villa 3 Garstang 1
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goal: Baldwin

Here a few words from Bails about Saturday's game:-

"Not a good day! We only had eleven players and, to make things worse, Rick Chamberlian pulled his groin in warm up although, to be fair, he played for twenty minutes before he had to come off. A red hot day and me on as sub, it was basically 'ten v eleven'.

So, not a day to make mistakes; but we did. After just getting back into the game, haven given Euxton a two goal lead, we than gave away a third which put an end toall thoughts of getting anything from this game.

There were pluses to take from the game, Oscar will have taken a lot from this game, and Jonny Baldwin and Jack Swindlehurst had good run outs. But we need to cut out the silly mistakes, start making better decisions, and make sure I don't ever have to put my footy boots on again!"

MATCH REPORT:
Garstang 1 Poulton Town 2
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goal: Chamberlain

It was derby day at the Riverside as the Reserves hosted local rivals Poulton Town and it was the visitors who left with all three points. On paper Garstang were fielding a strong team that looked capable of winning the game, however the first half performance can be described, at best, as disappointing with Poulton being the sharper and more hungry of the two teams.

A long ball from the away team created the first incident of note, the ball sailed over Porter’s head, who turned to chase the forward whilst Curwen advanced from his goal. The Poulton player won the race to the ball but was then fouled, however it was not clear which Garstang player committed the foul so fortunately the referee awarded a free kick and kept the red card in his pocket.  The resulting free kick was wasted and the home team were let off the hook. This warning was not heeded, however, and Garstang failed to up their game and were all at sea and did not really trouble Poulton in the whole half.

Porter then received a booking for bringing down a forward who had evaded him and was through on Curwen. With the visitors clamouring for a red, the referee had his hands full at this point as a couple of Poulton players looked for retribution.

The away side took the lead when a good cross into the box found the head of an unmarked midfielder. The powerful downward header produced a brilliant save from Curwen, but another Poulton player was on hand to tap the ball home.   Shortly after that, the lead was doubled when Swanwick gave away a clear cut penalty that was converted, despite Curwen guessing the right way.

The supporters were expecting changes at half time but Bailey sent out the same eleven to try and show what they could do. Whilst they started the half better, the home side did not come to life until the manager made his changes. Once Adam Roskell switched to the centre of midfield he looked a different player, Salthouse started to win headers when he came of the bench and Oscar Panepinto also made an impact unsettling the visitors defence.

Chamberlain was denied a goal by the linesman's flag but, shortly after this, he dragged the home side back into the match with a well taken finish. A neat passing move by Garstang then resulted in Chamberlain firing low towards the bottom corner but he was denied by a great save by the Poulton keeper.  The home side then huffed and puffed but failed to convert the pressure into chances.

The game continued to be ill tempered and difficult for the match official to control.  Whilst Panepinto was having a positive influence on the game and putting in a good shift, he was the victim of some heavy tackles.  He earned himself an unnecessary  yellow card for dissent following an alleged elbow. Shortly after this Panepinto fouled the Poulton centre half who responded by grabbing the Garstang player by the throat.  Panepinto’s early needless yellow card came back to haunt him as he received his second caution and he was followed off by the Poulton player, who was given a straight red.

This was the last excitement in the game and Poulton held out for the three points. All round a day to forget for the second team.

GARSTANG: Curwen, Porter , P Roskell, A Taylor (Snr), Sutcliff, Butler, Chappell, Swanwick, A Roskell, Kippax and Chamberlain
SUBSTITUTES: A Taylor (Jnr), Salthouse and Panepinto .

RESULT: Haslingden St Mary's 1 Garstang 1
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goal: Kippax

"Before the game I would have settled for a draw but, the way we played and the chances we created, we should have got all three points well before Jags missed a very late penalty. Again, we gave away a poor goal but, apart from hitting a post in the second half, Hasslingden never really looked like hurting us.

There were lots of pluses from this display: J Baldwin and P Roskell at the heart of defence, the number of chances we created, M Kippax with another goal and another game under his belt, and five U18's in the squad with Oscar coming on early in the second half and really pushing himself into contention for a starting place.

Coppull will be no push over over next Saturday but, if we keep playing with the same belief, we will hopefully get something out of the game. Finally, I must say a big thanks to Steve Burrows and Alex Curwen who were a big help on Saturday."

Cheers

GARSTANG: Dan Curwen, Paul Southward, Dan Sutcliff, Phil Roskell, Jonny Baldwin, Adam Swanwick, Sam Livesey, Andy Taylor Jnr, Rick Chamberlain, Mark Kippax and Jack Swindlehurst.
SUBSTITUTES: Rob Butler (Taylor Jnr 70 mins.), Oscar Panepinto ( Southward 60 mins.) and Andy Taylor Snr (Livesey 85mins.).

PRE-MATCH COMMENTARY:
Norcross / Haslingden

After the international break, Bailey’s team are chomping at the bit to get going again – especially given the nature of defeat against Norcross. If they can continue where they left off in the second half, it should be a good day for the ‘Resis’.

Bails welcomes back a bit of experience to blend in with his youthful squad for the visit to Haslingden with Robbie Butler and Andy Taylor Snr (who broke his arm at the same ground last time round, weird?) along with Jonny Baldwin and Mark Kippax, who have returned to the fold. Other than that, the squad looks fairly similar to the last outing with only Wormy missing through what could be a long term knee injury.

Haslingden is a notoriously difficult place to play and the lads will certainly have to be up for the fight. Having only scored the opening goal of a game once this year, in the draw away to Thornton, a quick start would be preferable but the lads have so far shown that going a goal down isn’t always a problem. I still think Bails would prefer a clean sheet in a 5–0 victory though!

And finally… Jags’ proposed deadline day move to Arsenal collapsed after Mr. Wenger didn’t feel he could accommodate another goal scoring midfielder into his squad after the acquisition of Mikel Arteta. Jags has refused to comment on increasing speculation that his future lies away from the Riverside, although it is rumoured that Bailey would be willing to listen to offers in the region of a bottle of Bud and a packet of Flaming Hot Monster Munch.

MATCH REPORT:
Garstang 2 Norcross & Warbreck 3
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goals: Stuart, Kippax

For the first 25 mins we were brilliant! Stuart, Chamberlain and Kelsall were causing all sorts of problems and we hit the bar and the post in quick succession. That good start seemed to make everyone think it would be a walkover and the twenty minutes before half time could not have gone any worse!

The first goal came after a scramble in the box that should've been cleared, twice over, allowed a norcross midfielder to amble onto the loose ball and pass it past Swanwick, below. The second was just a straight route one ball that did for our back four too easily and Jordan Spedding slotted coolly home and, just before half time, Southward jumped all over the back of a Norcross attacker after shocking marking from a freekick. Three - nil to the visitors!

After a few choice words from Bails at half time, we started with the same purpose as in the first half, but it wasn't till fifteen minutes before the end that we got a foothold in the game after Stuart intercepted a wayward backpass and scored.

It was all Garstang now and, shortly after some good work from Chamberlain, Kippax scored to set up a cracking finish. Chamberlain went close with a couple of minutes left but, unfornately, we left it a touch late.

A great second half was only marred by a Miller sending off, 'one for the team'. Bails could be be proud of 70 minutes of the performance but that 20 minutes before half time were abysmal.

Ricky Chamberlain - Collinson MoM

GARSTANG: Swanwick, Southward, P.Roskell (C), Miller , Wormleighton, Baldwin, Chamberlain, Taylor Jnr., Stuart, Livesey and Kelsall.
SUBSTITUTES: Kippax, Panepinto, Swindlehurst and Sutcliff (not used).

NORCROSS & WARBRECK: Larkland, Stead, Baker, Skellingham, O'Keefe, Daniells, Pritchard, A.Richardson, G.Richardson, Spedding and Dagger.

MATCH REPORT:
Thornton Cleveleys 2 Garstang 2
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goals: Swanwick, Chamberlain

The Garstang Reserve team maintained their early season form in a pulsating game against a very good Thornton second string. In an interesting mix of ages the Garstang team included four seventeen year olds and two 'veterans' in Marc Armstrong and Dave Porter, both of whom would have been prime contenders for Man of the Match.

A little against the run of play Garstang went in front after 13 minutes when home keeper, Wilson, could only palm out an Adam Roskell header back on to the head of Swanwick who obligingly headed the ball into the net, below.

Thornton’s Forrest forced Armstrong into a wonder save minutes later, as the home team came back strongly, and it wasn’t long before the equalizing goal came, Gillott rising high to head home a Challoner corner. Salthouse headed two glorious chances wide in the space of eight minutes before Thornton took the lead on 35 minutes when Chamberlain, in a desperate attempt to clear, could only turn Kennerley’s shot into his own net.

Both sides created and missed chances in the a second half that was a credit to the committment and skills of both sets of players, who gave 100%. Porter did take a booking for hauling down the irrepressible Forrest before Chamberlain scored, in the right net this time, when he was on hand to finish off a good cross from Salthouse in the 75th minute, below. Whilst Thornton substitute Reader headed wide from two yards with only a few minutes to go, it was a game that neither side deserved to loose.

Paul Southward - Collinson MoM

GARSTANG: Armstrong, Chamberlain, Southward, P.Roskell, Wormleighton, Porter , Jamin, A.Roskell, Salthouse, Swanwick and Swindlehurst.
SUBSTITUTES: Taylor Jnr. (Jamin 70 mins.), Panepinto (A.Roskell 77 mins.) and Livesey (Swanwick 69 mins.).

THORNTON CLEVELEYS: Wilson, Foulkes, Johnson, Moss, Stubbs, Radcliffe, Kennerley, Walmsley, Forrest, Gillot and Challoner.
SUBSTITUTES: Reader, Lambe and Bond.

RESERVES MATCH REACTION:
Tempest / Thornton Cleveleys

WL Reserve Division One

"With several players on holiday, working away, or getting a call up to the First Team, what was always going to be tough started to look like bloody tough!

So, a slow start and then going a goal down for the second time in two games, was not good.

However, we again showed great character to get back into this game. Tempest's forward players were very good, with great movement off the ball. Once we got ours heads around this, we took control and, once Butler scored, the lads relaxed and played. Swindlehurst and new signing Tom Kelsall really started to run the game and, with Stuart working hard upfront, we always looked a threat.

Defensively, we were sound throughout the game, starting with MoM Armstrong, Roskel and Wormleighton both marshalled the back line well. With two quality strikes from Swanwick and Kelsall the three points were in the bag, so what looked like being a tough day all round turned out good. Special mention to Phil Jamin who was outstanding as a second half sub.

Now we look forward to Mondays away game at Thornton Cleveleys."

MATCH REPORT:
Garstang 3 Tempest United 1
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goals: Kelsall, Swanwick, Butler

A good crowd of over 80 at the Riverside were treated to a very entertaining game, with both teams playing good football, and the majority will have left happy with Garstang taking the points. Following their excellent midweek performances, Bardsley and Jack were promoted to the First Team squad and this meant that Youth Team players Jamin and Graham were called into the Reserve squad.  Manager Bailey's plans were, however, thrown into chaos by a player simply failing to show up, but this meant Tom Kelsall stepping in at the last minute to help out.

Tempest came out of the blocks quickly, their forwards and midfield causing problems with sharp passing and interchanging positions. At times the home defence was stretched and the last man isolated 'one on one', but some last ditch tackling saved the day. Garstang survived an early scare when Porter committed a reckless foul but, fortunately the offical deemed it on the edge of the box and not inside. The resulting free kick was comfortably dealt with by Armstrong.

Tempest were now dominating the play and Garstang were finding it difficult to get into the game; the visitors forward two were proving a real handful.  The opening goal came when Garstang failed to track runners and a Tempest player broke into the box, before squaring to the unmarked Guffour who slotted home.   This goal spurred the visitors on and Garstang had to be satisified with the odd moment on the break.  An injury to the impressive Tempest forward knocked the visitors out of their stride and gave the home team confidence. Armstrong made a smart save low to his right to keep Garstang in the game before the balance of play changed with a quality cross from Swindlehurst finding Butler, who ghosted in from deep to head in his second goal in as many games. The tireless Stuart put an effort just wide and then Kelsall was denied by a fine save from the visiting keeper.

Bailey will have been the happier manager as the half time whistle blew, for half an hour Garstang were not really in the game, but the goal changed all that.

For large parts of the second half Tempest had the ball, but it was the home side who created the better chances. An injury forced Sutcliff off and he was replaced by Phillipe Jamin who made a real impact on his senior debut. He was an outlet for the defence and provided Stuart with support.

The Garstang back line were now looking more comfortable and, on the occasions when they were breached, Armstrong was quickly off his line to snuff out the attacks. The visitors did create chances, but seemed reluctant to shoot allowing Garstang players to get in blocks, Swanwick being the best example when he threw his body in the way to block a goal bound effort.

Garstang took the lead when a Tempest corner was punched clear, a quick one-two saw Swanwick with the ball on the edge of the box and his well placed effort went in off the post. As well as playing good passing football through the midfield, long goal kicks were causing the visitors problems. Jamin latched onto one of these kicks and put his effort just wide and this was followed by a great strike from Stuart that rattled the post. The goal that secured the points came from Kelsall. He had the ball wide on the right wing and his cross-cum-shot sailed over everyone and into the top corner.

Tempest were a very good side, coming to Garstang on the back of two wins, so Bailey must have been pleased, not only with the three points, but the performance of his squad. The team did not give in and stuck to their task all afternoon gaining their reward with the final scoreline.

Collinson's Man of the Match (voted by the specators): Marc Armstrong

GARSTANG: Marc Armstrong, Dan Sutcliff, Ian Wormleighton, Phil Roskell (c), Paul Southwood, Dave Porter, Adam Swanwick, Rob Butler, Tom Kelsall, Jack Swindlehurst and Ben Stuart.
SUBSTITUTES: Phillipe Jamin (Sutcliff 45 mins) and Tom Graham (Stuart 86 mins.).

MATCH REACTION:
Fulwood / Tempest United

WL Reserve Division One

Wednesday's Fulwood fixture was a good start to the season, if not the game, on a very wet night down at The Riverside.

Once we got into our stride, I though we control the first 45 mins with some good attacking footy and some solid defending. Swindlehurst, Jack and Matichechia were outstanding going forward. With a 3-1 lead at half time, I don't think we really got into top gear going foward in the second half but, defensively, we definitely did. Bardsley, Swanick, Wormleighton and Porter were always in control; in fact the whole team defended well and we grabbed a very good fourth goal which was put away well by Sounthward.

A big thanks to Thommo, who's input was appreciated, and the fans who made it down to a cold and wet Riverside. I will be looking for a similar performance on Saturday - but better weather. See you there.

Bails.

MATCH REPORT:
Garstang 4 Fulwood Amateurs 1
West Lancs Reserve Division One
Goals: Jack, Swindlehurst, Butler, Southward

This result wasn’t as comfortable as the score suggests; conceding a goal after only eight minutes when Fox rifled home at Armstrong’s near post.

Garstang were level within four minutes when Jack seized on a sloppy back pass to make it 1–1 then, only a minute later, it was 2–1 when young Swindlehurst finished off a fine cross by Jack. Dre Matichechia missed what can only be described as a sitter, with only the keeper to beat, when he shot wide, in the 30th minute.

Although Fulwood had more than shared the possession, they were denied clear cut chances. Garstang strengthened their grip on the game before the interval when Butler guided a near post header past the outstretched hands of Keeper Mountain, following a good cross from Swanwick.

For the first twenty minutes of the second half, it was Garstang who were doing all the defending, during which time Bardsley cemented his Collinson 'Man of the Match' award, with some timely tackles and interceptions that contributed significantly to Garstang winning the game.

Dave Porter, whose experience helped the younger players, gave Matichecchia another chance with a glorious through ball, below, but the strikers shot was well saved by the keeper.

Southward replaced Swindlehurst after 62 minutes and it wasn’t long before he had put his stamp on the game with a sweet left foot shot that nestled into the net, putting the game beyond Fulwood’s reach with only 12 minutes to play, following which, Panepinto replaced Dre Matichechia for the last ten minutes.

Manager Bailey must have been pleased with this performance in very wet conditions and, even though Garstang scored four goals, much of the praise must go to his defenders for keeping out the Fulwood strike force.
