HELLO NIGEL:

A few weeks ago a new face appeared in the Garstang dugout when Nigel Pallett took over the position of club physio. Whilst all the players have now got to know Nigel well, here is a brief introduction for everyone else.

Nigel was brought up in Nottingham, still retaining his affinity with Nottingham Forest, but had his first taste of Lancashire life back in 1994 when he moved into the area to study at Myerscough College. He headed for Brighton on completion of his course, where he managed a youth hostel, before moving back to Nottingham as the gym instructor at Nottinghamshire Cricket Club. During this time, he also became involved at Mansfield Town FC, assisting their physio, and started his own business as a Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist.

In 2011 Nigel, returned to Lancashire and began working as a freelance Sports Massage Therapist and Trainer. He is based in Ambleside, but also works in the physiotherapy clinic on Bridge Street in Garstang.

Nigel, whose interests include cycling, swimming, skiing and hill walking as well as football, joined Garstang FC at the end of September and has has proved a valuable asset, treating players across all three teams. Whilst normally on duty with the First Team, Nigel is now attending Youth Team games, providing them with advice and treatment in this important phase of their development.

Thanks for all the help Nigel and welcome to GFC.

VETS MATCH UPDATES:

Vets v Lytham [A] Sunday 4th December:
A very wet day and pitch awaited the Vets at Lytham but, with a strong squad with plenty of player rotation available, the Vets set up a comfortable 5-0 scoreline before the match was brought to a premature conclusion to protect the pitch from cutting up further. The midfield was marshalled well once more by Bendall and Lamoury, with strong performances 'up top' from Bailey and Painter who were amongst the goals, although Bailey had missed a host of earlier chances before he netted.

Vets v Clifton Casuals [A] Sunday 11th December.
Due to work and family commitments, numbers available for the trip were limited to just 12 with Bailey rescued from a shopping trip with his missus. However, this number was reduced to 11 with navigation difficulties affecting one of the squad - names removed to protect from further embarrassment.

But, with the returning Kippax up front and Barber and Lawrenson in midfield, Garstang started well creating a host of chances for themselves, Barber and Thompson in particular. The home side took the lead against the run of play with a dubious off-side goal which Keeper Smith could do nothing about. This brought about a period of misfortune as, with Lamoury, Kelsall and Kippax all pulling up with muscle injuries, it was looking like a long second half.

However, after weathering the early Clifton storm, Garstang equalised when Lamoury beat the offside trap to finish well. More chances followed, one in particular to the tireless Kippax, but was a Clifton own goal that put the visitors in front after another fine run and cross from Bailey. Painter and Kippax kept the ball well as Kelsall, Barber and Wellings mopped any rare attacks. However, another debatable decision saw Clifton awarded a penalty in the dying moments. This was expertly saved by Smith, who flung himself to his left to save the spot kick.

So, a good win by a patched up side and everyone one will get a rest until the New Year. Thankfully. Thanks to all who have helped and played over the last 12 months; let's hope we get some more games next year.

Happy Xmas and best wishes for the New Year. Parky.

THANKS FROM MICK QUINNEY:

RICHARD THOMAS LEAVES THE RIVERSIDE:

Well, this is the end of my time at Garstang FC. The Management Committee, unfortunately, no longer believe that I am equipped to take this club forward which is something that I must respect.

I have loved my short time at Garstang FC where I feel that I have taken a big step in the right direction, bringing in some good quality players and integrating them into a 'three team one squad' atmosphere. I am proud to have worked with good players and coaches but, more importantly, some good honest people.

The First Team lads have never thrown in the towel and have always worked hard to improve results, and the coaching staff have been top class. I would like to thank Ben Adjei, Marc Armstrong, Paul Bailey, Dave Porter and Alec Curwen for their efforts in working along with this ethos and doing their utmost for the club. It would have been good had we had the time for things to develop but, obviously, this is no longer the case.

I wish the new manager all the best. I am sure he will be successful as his knowledge and experience is second to none. He already has some quality players to work with so, with more to come, I am sure the club can get their way out of this current situation.

Thanks to everyone and all the best, Tommo.

C.R.Y. DONATION:

On Friday the 19th August 2011 Garstang Football Club held it’s Annual Golf Day, played in memory of former player and keen golfer David Quinney. A total of nineteen teams entered the competition, Mick Hoyle's 'Lancaster City FC' team taking the top award.

Garstang FC made the decision to re-name the golf day to the 'David Quinney Memorial Competition' a few years back to ensure that David was not forgotten and that, once a year, we took time out to compete in one of his favourite sports.

Following David’s tragic death, the Quinney family became involved in the Cardiac Risk in the Young Charity and have raised money to support this cause over the years. As a result of this, the football club make a donation to the charity each year from the proceeds of the golf day.

Marc Armstrong, handing over the £100 cheque to Mark Dickinson, below, a former GFC player who accepted it on behalf of the Quinney family, said "It is fitting that the Football Club remembers David each year and that we continue to support the CRY Charity. I would urge everyone to visit the CRY website and find out more about their work and exactly what they can do to help."

Mick Quinney, David's father: "On behalf of the family I would like to thank Garstang Football for their donation to CRY. The money will be put to good use.  People need to be aware of Cardiac Risk in the Young rather than simply thinking it would never happen to them.  David loved his football and we would like to wish Garstang FC all best for the season."

A CLOSE SHAVE:
Garstang Courier

A Charity head shave took place in The Kings Arms on Sunday the 23rd October 2011, raising money for MacMillan Cancer Care.

The head shave raised more than £1,000 for MacMillan Care, with plucky volunteers Joe Miller, Carlo Matichecchia, Gary Fawcett, Adam Roskell, Jay Bardsley, Andrew Taylor, Andrew Ireland, Dan Curwen, King’s landlord and Garstang FC Club President Mick Gornall and Andrew Pyke all having their locks shorn by Sam, from Sam’s Barbers, Thomas’ Weind.

Organiser Emily Richardson said: “We would like to thank Sam for supporting us in a huge way by shaving the lads’ heads and Mick Gornall from the Kings for letting us use his pub as our location for the fund-raising. And a big thanks to everyone who donated – well done to the lads!"

Garstang Vets 3  BAE Warton Vets 3:
Goals: Barber, Painter, Lamoury

Garstang maintained their recent unbeaten run but were severely tested by one of the best sides they have faced so far.  With some early morning rain making the surface a little tacky and greasy, both sides took their time to settle but it was the home side who had the better possession, utilising the width of the pitch to get in good positions, without really testing the visiting keeper, Roskell and Barber working tirelessly to get forward.

However, slightly against the run of play the visitors took the lead around 25 minutes in,  when a corner was allowed to drift into the back post for a BAE midfielder to poke home.  The vets response to get forward more and Painter hit the bar with a free kick, Barber was harshly adjudged to be offside when planting a header into the net and Bailey throwing himself on the floor in a vain attempt to win a penalty when in a good shooting position.

Half time brought about a couple of changes but it was the visitors who doubled their lead when they broke quickly and, despite a good save from keeper Smith, the forward followed up to tap home.

From this point, however, it was all Garstang with Bendall, Lamoury and Rafferty all creating chances for the front three of Bailey, Painter and Kippax, Bailey having a rasping effort tipped onto the bar and a 'brave' header put wide.  A smart turn and shot from Barber halved the deficit and Jaimie Painter finished off a smart move at the back post to level the scores. Garstang's pressure looked to have won the game when a fine glancing header from Lamoury put them 3-2 up.  However, the spoils where shared when a harsh free kick was awarded against stalwart Tugman and the home side failed to clear the resulting free kick.

So three all, a fair result against a decent side and everyone blew a cry of relief when referee Don Berry called an end to proceedings. On to the next game in a months time, when bodies and self esteem has been repaired.

*Neil Parkinson set a new Garstang club record for giving the ball away to opposition players when under no pressure whatsoever.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:

The AGM of Garstang Football Club was held at Garstang Hotel and Golf Club last night when the formal business of accepting the financial accounts and officer reports was concluded unanimously.

A difficult year on the field, compounded by an equally difficult economic climate, had made for a challenging year, and the meeting minutes recorded the Club's gratitude for the work of the committee, the continuing support of it's sponsors, and to everyone who contirbuted to the lottery, now numbering 615 members.

The Club's finances remain healthy and, with more diligent management during the season and a successful outcome to our planning application, we can look forward to exciting times ahead.

Adrian Wilding, Marc Armstrong, Davo Davis, Fred Miller, Bob Freeman, Les Taylor, Steve Baker and Mark Benthall were all re-elected to the committee for a further year; Ian Blezard and Paul Hutton standing down due to their other committments.

With Ian, that is not so much of a problem as he will continue to manage the website, although it does mean that we need to strengthen our 'local news team', and the appeal has already gone out for anyone who would like to help in this interesting area.

Paul Hutton relinquishing his role as Club Secretary is, however, much more critical and we do need to find a replacement urgently. If you can help, call Les Taylor on 07967 337416.

The 'official' minutes will be available at a later date.
