LOTTERY WINNER

Chris Walker scooped the August £1000 main prize in the Garstang Fc Score Lottery proudly sponsored by Vehicle Solutions Ltd. Local lad Chris made the short journey to the VSL showroom to collect his cheque from directors Steve and Chris Hargreaves. The winner played for the club last season and decided to carry on with the lottery and he is reaping the rewards. Chris said "It took a bit for the news to sink in and for a while I didn't believe it as I've not been in that long! I am saving for a house so the money will come in very handy" Club spokesman, Malcolm Abraham, said, "it's great that Chris carried on supporting the club even though work meant he couldn't play every week. Should anyone else want the chance to win a grand and support the team they can join for only a fiver a month." Anyone interested in joining please contact Marc Armstrong on 07470404669.

WEEKEND FIXTURES

Saturday 16th September

West Lancs Premier Division

GARSTANG v THORNTON CLEVELEYS KO 3PM

If the rain relents then we will welcome Thornton Cleveleys to the Riverside on Saturday. Garstang have no injury worries and welcome Entwistle back to the squad after he missed last weeks Amateur Shield win over Wythenshawe Amateurs. The Riversiders will be looking to extend their unbeaten run but Thornton will be stiff opposition. Although they currently lie 11th in the league it's a false position as they have played all the top teams and have put 7 past both Slyne and Coppull in their last two outings.

Sunday 17th September

LSL Youth Div White

GARSTANG v MYERSCOUGH KO 11AM

Although this fixture has been scheduled by the league there is some doubt as to whether Myerscough have raised a squad as they didn't fulfil their Lancs cup fixture last week and with the player registration deadline tomorrow they currently have no players registered. Watch this space.

CAN YOU HELP?

Garstang FC Reserves Manager Hugh Sneddon and Assistant Joe Miller

Garstang FC Reserves have made a fantastic start to the new season, currently unbeaten, lying 2nd in the league and through to the next round of the cup. Hugh and Joe (pictured above) have put in an awful lot of hard work to achieve this but they need assistance with some jobs which would help enormously and help raise the profile of the team. If you can help with any of the following please email northender29@btinternet.com or contact Hugh on 07908 666829.

1. Linesperson ideally at home and away games but any help appreciated.

2. Match Reporter (for website and Courier)

4. Assist taking down nets and tidying changing room after games.

Stewart Rowe Memorial Cup 1st Round

GARSTANG RES v HURST GREEN RES KO 3PM

It's time for a break from the league after a hectic August which sees both the first team and the reserves sitting in 3rd place in their respective divisions. The first team have the toughest of draws in the 1st round of The Richardson Cup, which they have reached the final of in the last two seasons, as they travel to last season's league champions Longridge Town who are unbeaten this season. The reserves are unbeaten but they also have a tough 'derby' game at home to Hurst Green Res who have also had a good start to the season. Both games should be crackers so get down and support the lads.

EUXTON VILLA v GARSTANG KO 3PM

Garstang travel to Euxton to complete the hectic August schedule which apart from the first game of the season has gone well so far for The Riversiders who currently sit in second place to Euxton's fourth. Matty Poole and Jack Swindlehurst are out injured but otherwise the full squad should be available for what is always a tough fixture.

West Lancs Div 3

GARSTANG RES v TURTON RES KO 3PM

It's first v second at The Riverside on Saturday as the league's two form sides meet each other. Sneddon and Miller have had the luxury of a large quality squad available to them which does present it's own problems trying to keep everyone happy but there are a few missing this weekend which means the shirts are up for grabs and players can stake their claim to a starting place by their performance on Saturday.

MATCH PREVIEWS:

GARSTANG FC v BLACKPOOL WREN ROVERS (KO: 3pm)

On Saturday Garstang welcome local rivals Wren Rovers to the Riverside for what is always an entertaining game.  The visitors lost the title on the last day of last season and will be looking to go one better this time.  Lee Baker will not worry too much about the opposition and he will demanding more from his players as he seeks to build on the mid week victory.

Match report from Wednesday now available on the match report page.

HASLINGDEN ST MARY'S RES v GARSTANG RES (KO 3pm)

The reserves make the trip to Haslingden hoping for a better result than the first team managed last weekend.  Manager Hugh Sneddon has a few headaches with 19 players available for selection but he would rather have that than not enough.  The performances in the last two games will make the decisions harder for him and his assistant, Joe Miller.  The gaffer said "We have great strength in depth this year with some of the youngsters coming in and really impressing.  One thing I learned last year is that we will need a big squad and it is my job to keep everyone happy. We need to build on Wednesday's win and secure another three points."

Weekend Fixtures:

Haslingden St Marys v Garstang Fc KO 3pm

Saturday sees the return of competitive action for the senior teams and Lee Baker takes his boys to Haslingden for the curtain raiser.   During the summer break Baker and Beesley have been busy strengthening their squad as well as retaining key players from last year and this has been evident during the pre-season games.  Crowd favourites like Pooley and Jim Brindle have returned along with several new faces who have all performed well so far.  Haslingden will be a team full of confidence having won the Division One title last year in order to gain promotion, so the squad will have to gel quickly for what will be a tough opener.

Garstang Reserves v Thornton Cleveleys A KO 3pm

The Reserves start their season at home in the newly formed third division of the West Lancs League against a newly formed team in Thornton A.   The reserves are under the new management of Hugh Sneddon assisted by Joe Miller and they cannot wait for the competitive action to start.  As always it will take a while for the reserves squad to settle down but with the vast majority of last years players committing to the club it looks like a promising season for the second team.   The new gaffer knows the importance of  a good start and he will be stressing this to his players tomorrow.

GARSTANG FC 2-1 MOORSIDE RANGERS (R.Coar 1, Entwistle 1)

Garstang won their last friendly of pre-season with two goals in the last minute of what proved to be a tough workout for Lee Baker's boys.  Moorside had more possession in the first half but it was Garstang who created the better chances.   Alan Coar missed a penalty and then the usually deadly forward allowed the visiting keeper to make a good save from close range when he should have scored.  Next to be wasteful in front of goal was Poole, when the ball was pulled back to him eight yards out he blazed over.   The second half was again an even affair with the visitors going ahead when their forward pounced on an error and hit a great strike from the corner of the box that bend away from the despairing dive of Swallow and into the net.   Garstang pressed for an equaliser and Rick Coar looked likely to score but he delayed shooting and allowed the defender to make a block, then he should have scored with a header.  As the game entered the last minute Rick Coar smashed in from a tight angle to convert the most difficult chance to fall the forwards way.  Within seconds of this Garstang got the ball back and Entwistle exchanged passes before calmly slotting into the bottom corner.

Jim Turnbull was the lucky £1000 winner in the June draw of the Garstang FC 'Score' Lottery proudly sponsored by local company Vehicle Solutions Ltd. Jim was delighted with his winnings and the 92 year old said, " I normally go to Blackpool every year for a few days holiday but I was struggling to afford it, however my win means I will be able to go." When Jim went to VSL he got a further surprise when he was presented with the cheque sat in a 1924 Bullnose Morris, which was made the year he was born. Charles Collinson who collects monthly cash payers for the club said "I am chuffed that Jim has won, he has supported the club via the Lottery for a while and his patience has paid off. I would also like to thank Stephen and Chris Hargreaves from VSL who made a real fuss of Jim when he collected the cheque, it was a lovely touch doing it in one of their cars and Jim really enjoyed it." The lucky winner echoed this adding, " I really enjoyed my visit to the garage and looking at the cars, particularly the older ones that they have it brought back a lot of memories."

Garstang Reserve Manager Hugh Sneddon has appointed current reserve team skipper Joe Miller (pictured above) as his assistant player/manager for the forthcoming season. Joe has been involved with the club for many years from being a mascot to playing in the youth and senior teams and has been a one club man throughout his playing career. Hugh said "Joe was an obvious choice for me and his knowledge of the club will be invaluable. I was delighted he accepted my offer." Joe commented "I had a good think about what I was committing to but I knew I couldn't resist the challenge and I'm really looking forward to it."

DAVE GRAHAM'S GARSTANG FC (YOUTH) GREATEST XI

I have been actively involved at Garstang FC for the past 6 years starting when most of my Cockerham under 16s moved up to the Garstang youth team. Since then I have been youth team manager, reserves caretaker manager, welfare officer, youth development officer, committee member, website manager and general dogsbody!!

As Bob Freeman found, trying to narrow it down to 11 players when you have seen so many quality players is very difficult and although I have decided to restrict my team to players I have seen coming through the youth team it wasn't any easier. To avoid any allegations of parental bias (and to make my selection a tiny bit easier!) I have not included my lads, Tom and Josh, in the equation but both were on the shortlist and the Panepinto/Graham combination who scored 70+ goals between them in the 2011/12 season would take some beating. I've gone for 3-4-3 formation.

WEST LANCS LEAGUE AWARDS NIGHT

Garstang FC has another successful evening at the annual West Lancs League Awards Dinner held last night at Blackpool Football Club. In addition to being re-presented with The Richardson Cup Runners Up Trophy (pictured above right) the first team also received the Premier League "Fair Play" award ( being collected above left by Assistant Manager Neil Beesley) and the reserve team won the Division 2 Hospitality award which was due in no small part to the excellent after match food laid on at The Farmer Arms, Garstang by Mick, Jackie and the staff.

A club spokesperson said "We are delighted with the way last season went and these awards show that we are not only ambitious on the field but we are also doing the right things off it. There is a lot of work involved in running a football club and we couldn't do it without the help of our sponsors, supporters and the local community so a big thank you to everyone and we hope you can enjoy our success."

UNDER 18 YOUTH TEAM TRIALS THIS WEDNESDAY

Garstang FC have set trial dates for players for their under 18 side for next season. The dates are Wednesday 31st May, Wednesday 7th June and Wednesday 21st June. All will commence at 6.45pm at The Riverside ground, High Street, Garstang PR3 1FU. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend at this time to have an opportunity to view the excellent facilities that will be the home ground of the youth team, meet senior and youth team management, be given a brief overview of the aims and ambitions of the club and a chance to ask any questions. After that players will jog down to The Beeches training ground for a session with the coaches. Players should bring boots, trainers, shin pads and a drink. To qualify for next season players must be under 18 on or before 31st August 2017.

Garstang FC have an established youth team set up with the prime aim of developing players and assisting them with the transition from youth to senior football. Once the youth squad has been selected then the youth and senior teams all train together so that everyone is familiar with each other. The youth team play in the Lancashire Sunday League but any youth team player with potential will be given the opportunity to experience adult football either through our reserve or first teams who play in the West Lancashire League which is at the top of the pyramid of amateur football in the North West.

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved with an ambitious club who have a vibrant and innovative management team backed by a dedicated committee. If you can't make any of the trial dates or you require any further information please contact the Youth Development Officer, Dave Graham, on 07501 119458.

So who better to start this off than Bob Freeman who has been at the club for 50 years.

Bob Freeman

"I have just finished my 50th season with the club after making my debut in 1961 and returning in 1967. I played regularly until the late 1980's and made my last appearance for the reserves, who were short, in the West Lancashire League in 1996 against Vickers reserves. I was 51 at the time and scored in the first half before being substituted at half time. I spent most of my playing career in the reserves and scored in the 60's 70's 80's and 90's although I was a defender with a long time partnership with Peter Brown."

"I have held all the officers posts at the club learning from Eddie Livesey. I have managed the reserves and the first team and was groundsman for many years. With Dave Corless we started a junior team in the mid 80's and 5 of those players were in the Amateur Shield winning team in 2000."

"This has influenced my greatest 11 which taken some time to sort out. There have been many players from my early days who possibly should have been included but there are too many for me to list. Some names from more recent times have also been unlucky, so here goes:- Marc Armstrong, John Danson, Lee Baker, Geoff Wilson, Richard Lamoury, Richard Bamber, Neil Ball, Mick Gornall, Richard Walmsley, Dave Willoughby and Alan Coar. Endless list of subs and I know it would be possible to come up with another team just as good from them."

LOTTERY WINNER

Ian Poole was the lucky winner of April's Garstang Fc 'Score' Lottery which is now proudly sponsored by Vehicle Solutions Ltd. Ian's son Matty was a popular figure at The Riverside when he played centre forward for the club before leaving to play for Lancaster City Fc and Ian was a regular visitor to cheer his son on. When told he'd won the one thousand pound main prize Ian was both shocked and surprised, he was unsure what he was going to do with the money but he guaranteed he'd have a few beers to celebrate! Ian was presented with his winners cheque at the VSL garage situated on Leachfield Business Park, Green Lane, Garstang and he is pictured receiving his cheque from VSL company director Christopher Hargreaves. MANAGERIAL CHANGE

Simon Bentham (left) and Hugh Sneddon

Garstang FC Reserve Manager, Simon Bentham, has informed the club that he has accepted an offer as reserve manager at his old club Fulwood Amateurs FC and will move on with immediate effect. Garstang Chairman, Adrian Wilding, has acted quickly and the club are pleased to announce that Simon's replacement as manager will be Reserve Assistant Manager, Hugh Sneddon.

Reacting to the surprise news Simon said "This has come out of the blue and has been a difficult and emotional decision for me as I have had a fantastic time at Garstang and was looking forward to next season with a great set of lads" He went on "However, Fulwood Amateurs is a club I have been connected with for a long time and having spoken to them as to their future plans and my role in those plans I decided to accept their offer. I would like to thank everyone at Garstang FC for their help and support and only time will tell if I have made the right decision."

Chairman, Adrian Wilding, said "Whilst disappointed to be losing Simon we understand his reasons and wish him well for the future." He continued "In order to maintain stability I immediately contacted the committee and they were 100% behind my decision to offer the managers role to Hugh (Sneddon) and we are delighted he accepted." He added "Hugh has already got a great rapport with the squad, knows the youth set up and we are actively working on supporting him and his as yet unnamed assistant(s)."

New Garstang FC Reserve Manager Hugh said "Things have moved very quickly over the last 48 hours and it's all been very unexpected." He went on "Simon and I have been mates for a long time and we loved our first season at Garstang FC so it was a surprise when he told me he was moving on but I know Fulwood Amateurs are in his blood and that's a large part of his reason for going." He concluded "When Adrian (Wilding) contacted me about taking the managers job it was a no brainer for me and after a quick call to the missus I accepted immediately. I'm really looking forward to it and I can't wait to  get started."
